Advantages Short chapters make it a page turner
Disadvantages Not long enough
I have been a fan of James Patterson for many years. I first stumbled upon his Alex Cross series and fell in love with the character and his style of writing. I have read all of the books in both the Alex Cross series and the Women's Murder Club and have passed them around dozens of my friends who love them and rely on me to buy the new editions as soon as they arrive on the bookshelf.
I year or so ago he wrote a book which was a change from the norm called "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas" which was a far cry from his usual crime thrillers. I had my doubts at first but after one chapter I couldn't put the book down and read it within a few hours. I was delighted to see him release "Sam's Letters to Jennifer" and hoped that I wouldn't be disappointed.Needless to say I wasn't disappointed and as soon as I picked up this book I was hooked. James Patterson is a great writer as he keeps all of his chapters short which makes you want to keep reading on. I always think that I'll read to the end of the chapter and then put the book down but with James Patterson you try that but because they are so short you read another one and another one and so on. Before you know it you have finished the book and are crying out for more.
Anyway, on to the plot - without trying to give too much away. The gist of the story is that we are introduced to Jennifer and given a little of her background. She gets a call to let her know that her grandmother has been taken to hospital so she packs up and heads off to the Lake to see her. Her Grandmother is in a coma and so Jennifer heads to her home to unpack and finds a bundles of letters all addressed to her. It turns out that Sam (the Grandmother) has written these letters to her granddaughter to explain some things about her past and so the story unfolds with Jennifer spending time waiting for Sam to come out of the coma and reading the letters in between. While she is staying at Sam's lake house she meets a man who she knew from visiting Sam's as a child. He becomes a huge part of the story although I don't want to give too much away.
I will leave the suspense to those of you who choose to read the novel. If you are a fan of James Patterson and particaulary, "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas" you will love this book. For those who have never read James Patterson but love a romance or a weepy I am sure you will love it too and probably go in search of the back catalogue of the author.

Well it seems that it is I, now, who is uncultured, I haven't a clue who on earth James Patterson is. Good review, however, maybe I'll look into him one day... All the best, Martin
