This is the first of two products in the Samsonite Travel Cot range and it leads on to the Samsonite Pop Up Bubble Travel Cot (which I have also reviewed). It is a brilliant, pioneering product and was the first of its kind on the market when I bought it while still pregnant with my first child in 2003/04.
The Samsonite Pop Up Travel Cot is available in three colours - pink and blue in the standard model and stone in the deluxe model. The standard models are made of cotton and nylon, although the baby only lies on cotton, with the main outer body being made of the easily cleaned nylon while the deluxe model is all cotton except the nylon mosquito net - this does seem to make it slightly cooler but more difficult to clean any stains.
I chose this travel cot over more traditional ones based purely on it's size when folded up - its only 27cm in diameter! Being the size of an average dinner plate when packed
away it was so handy when our daughter was small (it is suitable from birth to when the child can sit up unaided, which was just over 8 months for our daughter). We could just sling it in her changing bag or over the pram handle and off we went!
When set up it measures 88 cm long by 54 cm wide, which is brilliant for a young baby as they often get upset in huge beds (or at least my daughter did), allowing the child to sleep comfortably. It comes with a soft , cotton covered mattress that just sits in the base allowing you to tuck in a standard crib/cot sheet to protect it; an integral zip-over mosquito net and loops in the top to hang your baby's favourite toy.
It is very simple to put up - the main body literally pops up, u just place the base in the bottom and finally add support rods in the top and sides - and, once you have mastered the skill, it is equally easy to put away! The mosquito net can either be zipped into place or tucked away in an integral pocket if not needed.
The only problems we found were:
1) if using a normal crib/cot sheet on the mattress it could wrinkle up. This wasn't really a problem for us but something to be aware of. You can buy fitted sheets to fit the egg shaped mattress but I can't remember where I saw them. I will find the details and up date my review as soon as I can - sorry. UPDATE - I HAVE FOUND THEM! PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
2) the cot sits directly on the floor - that is, there is no gap between the base and the floor - which isn't really a problem unless the floor is cold. We got around this by putting a blanket on the floor first and then the cot on the top if we thought it was going to be cold.
All in all this is a wonderful product which has had loads of use in our family when out on picnics, at the sea side and away over night or for the weekend. We didn't go overseas while our daughter was in it but I would have felt comfortable taking it as her main bed for a two week holiday. I would strongly recommend to any parent but especially those of you with limited storage space.

FITTED SHEETS UPDATE:
As promised, I searched the net and found some details about these sheets. There is only one site that I found that sells the sheets (in a two pack) on their own and, at the time of writing, they only had baby pink in stock. The other sites sell a package of two 100 % cotton fitted sheets (washable at 60°C) in either baby pink or baby blue with a duluxe mattress to give your baby extra comfort. The mattress is extra thick, is wipeable and comes in its own carry case. I can not comment on these products as I did not use them myself but I have put the site details for information.
You can buy Samsonite fitted sheets and Deluxe mattress from:
http://shop.babyworld.co.uk £11.99 for a two pack of fitted sheets or £24.99 for the Deluxe mattress + two fitted sheets (baby pink or baby blue)
http://shop.uptofive.co.uk £24.50 for the Deluxe mattress + two fitted sheets (baby pink or baby blue)
www.travellingwithchildren.co.uk £24.99 for the Deluxe mattress + two fitted sheets (baby pink or baby blue)
I have recently discovered that Zapf Creation make a version of this travel cot for your little one's dolly/teddy! It is approximately 16cm in height, 47cm long and 37cm wide, is suitable for ages 3+ and can be used with the 46cm Baby Annabell doll (sold separately). The bed comes with a mattress, blanket and a storage bag and all are in a lovely baby pink and white. I have not tried this out but am sure it would be fun, and definitely easy to store.
You can buy the Zapf Creation travel cot for £19.99 from:
On a final note regarding the Samsonite Pop Up Travel Cot, when my daughter grew out of the cot aged just over 8 months, we 'up-graded' to the Samsonite Pop Up Bubble Travel Cot. She has just grown out of that, aged just over two years, so we have now bought the 'My First Ready Bed' which I hope to review shortly.
You may think that by buying three different travel cots/beds for my daughter I am spending a fortune and taking up more space than if I had just bought one travel cot. However, you would be mistaken! The cost of the three cots/beds put together is the same or just under that of the average price of a travel cot and, even when placed together, they still take up less space!

They make some fantastic fold up things now don't they! I have a fold up linen bag, great as we have little space to store a big solid one! Karen

I had one of these - it was absolutely brilliant, especially for taking abroad when there's so much to pack for small babies anyway!
