I always had and ink jet printer. But at work I used laser printers and I loved them. Unfortunately they have been far too big for home use. I am not sure why but I always have been convinced that a laser printer is somehow better- the speed, the quality, just everything. How wrong I was!!! A couple of months ago I saw the Samsung CLP-300 on a website and it looked brilliant. Well, everything looks brilliant if someone wants to sell it. Anyhow, for me it looked good enough. But I did not want to pay £150 for a new printer. So, I had a look in ebay. And there it was my Samsung CLP-300 for £100. Well, I bid on and got it for £112 in the end.
The CLP-300 claims to be the world's smallest and lightest colour laser printer. Well, at least at that time. It’s measurements are 390 x 344 x 265 mm, which is pretty small for a laser printer. It’s weight is 13.6 kg, which I found pretty heavy. But that’s simply because I am so used to inkjet printer. Looking at the box, it says the CLP-300 uses 350W when printing and 17W at standby. I cannot measure it, so I am not sure, if that’s true. But it does seem to be a lot. It’s pretty loud when printing. But it was ok for me. It does get pretty hot , though after just 3 pages printing. The speed is quite good, as it print about 16 pages per minute (back and white) or 4 if it’s colour. These are the details given. But my experience tells me something different. It’s about 2 pages per minute, if you are lucky. Normally there is a paper jam after the first page. Or it says there is one. Really the printer just cannot pull the pages through and it stops half way through. One positive thing is the cartridges. I bought the printer about 7 months ago and did not have to change them once since. The waste toner is separate from the cartridges and needs changing occasionally. I did not buy a new one, but just emptied the existing one, which seemed to be ok. Another negative thing is the paper tray. It’s right at the bottom of the printer and this seems to cause problems, as the manual feed does not always work. I looked up prices for some of the parts you need to replace from time to time and they seem to be pretty reasonable. The below prices are from ebay: Black Toner - £25.99, Cyan Toner - £21.99, Magenta Toner - £21.99, Yellow Toner - £21.99, Waste Toner Box - £5.99, Image Unit - £72.99 If it does work the quality is pretty good for normal print outs. If you want to print photographs you really should use something else.
All in all, I think it is not worth buying. It just seems to cause to many problems.
