The Samsung Group is South Korea's largest conglomerate (chaebol), composed of numerous businesses, including Samsung Electronics, the world's largest electronics company. It was founded in 1938 and has over 220,000 employees and carries the slogan "Imagine the Possibilities".
The Samsung product in question is the Digimax A502. It is quite a cute little gadget in black and silver and looking at the overall design, it looks pretty simple and easy to use and it is it nice 5MP. The power button is on the top along with the shutter button and microphone. The product includes the actual camera (obviously), User Manual, Product Warranty, Software CD and USB Cable (to connect to computer and printers). You will have to buy your memory card and other accessories separate. The front displays the Lens, self-timer lamp, flash, focus ring
and strap eyelet. The sides of the camera have the USB connection port and Battery chamber (which includes the memory card slot). The back of the camera has an LCD monitor to view your taken pictures/recorded videos and 7 buttons including zoom in/out, menu, delete and play/pause. The camera itself needs 2 AA batteries to function properly and can last quite a while if you are generous with the amount of "snapping" you do.
The camera includes a lot of nifty features including: Recording mode: you can record your own little videos with this feature. An empty 256MB Memory card could record about 15 minutes on 24FFS (Frames Per Seconds) at 320x240 quality as an AVI (MJPEG) File. Unfortunately when you playback on your camera there is no sound until you upload onto the computer. You can also record just sound on it's own.
Self-Timer: This can be used as 4 processes, 2seconds, 10seconds, two pictures, (2seconds between each) or not at all. The self-timer lamp will blink when the timer is activated and blink very quickly about 2/3 seconds before the picture is going to be taken.
Modes: These can help improve your photo quality under different circumstances. It is usually best to have it on Auto for most but you can change it on the menu. Modes include Night (Obviously for Night photos and other dark conditions), Landscape (For scenery shots with green woods and blue skies) and Fireworks (For firework scenes).
Effects: These consist of Normal, Black & White (B&W) and Sepia. It would be nice if there were a few more effects on the camera as you would find on one of their phones i.e. Negative, Solarize and Sketch. They could really spice up your photos.
Frames: These are fun but can't be used on the higher quality and big size pictures. There are 9 frames in total that include "Happy Birthday" (with a cake), "Merry Christmas" (Have your picture taken with Rudolph "dressed" as Santa), Fishy Frame and a Graduation frame. Again they could add more to the frames to make the camera more fun.
Continuous Shots: You can either take a single shot only, or take 2, 4 or 8 shots (depending on the size and quality). The higher the quality and size, the less continuous shots you are able to make (The high resolutions and picture quality increases the saving time, therefore, increasing the stand-by time, therefore, making it less useful for continuous shots).
Flash: The flash is very good for night shots, all the ones I have taken look as though they've been taken with a light already on them. I always have my flash on auto, as the camera will use the flash if the subject or background is dark and I don't have to fuss around changing it all the time. You can set it to "Fill in Flash" which will use the flash regardless of light. You can turn the flash off, have a slow flash or have it as Auto & Red eye reduction.
PictBridge: This allows you to connect your camera to a PictBridge supported printer (via the USB Cable) and print the images on your camera directly. It's quite handy if you can't be bothered with the hassle of a computer and just want your photos printed. Although you'd have to refer back to your User's Manual to change the USB settings (From Computer to Printer).
Other features include "trimming", rotating, protecting and printing (with a photo printer or computer printer) your images. You can also add date and time to your photo but the information is already stored in the photo (it's not shown) for when you transfer it to your computer if you do.
Improvements: As I mentioned before, it would be a lot more appealing if it had more frames and effects included in the camera. The stand-by time after taking a picture before you can take another picture can become long if it is dark so improving that would be start. Improve the speed of the file saving so the frames/effects can be used with higher resolution and picture quality images. Sometimes waiting for the camera to actually take the picture can be quite tedious (sometimes camera takes a while and a few error beeps for the camera to actually take a picture).
Overall it is quite a reliable camera. I regularly use it and have had no faults or problems with the actual device and the User's manual is very detailed and informative over any problems I have using the camera (connecting it to a printer for one!). I would recommend it for anyone wanting a modest camera (But don't ask me about the price as I didn't buy it!) that is easy to use and reliable.
