I read various articles regarding a thing known as region hacks which make a player able to read different regionally coded dvds. I found that the Samsung 511 had a successfull region hack which can be applied simply by pressing a series of buttons on the remote and bingo! it can play all regions of DVDs.

>Picture< In terms of picture quality I cannot fault the Samsung 511 at all I now own a much more expensive player and I cannot notice the difference in picture quality myself.
>Playback & Sound< Okay, so the features list is nothing to get that excited about, but the Samsung compensates by offering terrific performance for the money. It has a lively, highly detailed and colourful picture, with great contrast and rich black tones. It's a noticeable step-up over the other budget players in this price range, and much closer to the sort of sharpness that you can expect from £300 player like Toshiba.
Sonically, the news is good too. The Samsung packs in a 24bit/96kHz DAC, and sounds keen when spinning CDs; there's not quite enough bass, but the top-end is smooth enough to do justice to most music. Through the scart, movies have good midrange punch and the digital outputs work effectively with DTS movies.
>Style & Build< Nothing pretty, perhaps, but the Samsung is professionally executed and classy when compared with many of its price rivals. The simple silver fascia is fairly bleak, but the display looks fine, and the key buttons operate with a solidity that suggests you can expect many hours of trouble-free service. The size of the player is however very large.
>Extra Features< The Samsung concentrates on doing the basics well. It only carries a single scart socket but this offers the RGB picture performance system for the best results when connected to your TV.
Seperate S-Video and composite sockets are also provided as alternatives, although unusually a slider switch is fitted, which you flip in order to select between scart and S-Video (on newer players this is done through on screen stup menus). A pseudo-PAL colour system option is fitted (PAL60) for use with imported NTSC DVDs, allowing you to play these discs on a TV that cannot handle NTSC media, like my old tv.
>Connectivity< Two digital outputs are provided, one optical, the other coaxial, and both compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio.
>Video-CD and Super Video-CD playback< Now I was surprised such a cheap player was capable of play VCDs. At the time of purchase I wasn't particularly bothered about this feature and didn't know anything about it but as time passed I became more interested in the creation of my own VCDs and even SVCDs (yes i managed to get my samsung 511 to play certain SVCDs).
I experimented with various VCDs and different types of CD-R and found only a few certain brands would be read by the Samsung 511. When they where read by the player they played perfectly and I was impressed but the CD-R brand limitation was some what of an annoyance in the end. I also managed to get the player to play SVCDs these are high quality films on normal CD-Rs (nearly as good as DVDs). But after a few years of owning the player it is now unable toplay SVCDs they tend to refuse to play at all or just stutter far to much to be watchable. My friend has never been able to get SVCDs to work on his older Samsung 511 at all.
>Conclusion< Over the years I have enjoyed using my Samsung 511 and found it to be a good all round performer. It's fussyness with certain VCDs was a problem for me in the end as I wanted more from my dvd player but for general basic use this dvd player is fantastic. I would reccommend it to anyone who Isn't particularly bothered about MP3 or VCD playback. The picture and sound is great and the onboard PAL/NTSC convertor enabling playback of NTSC formatted dvds on older TVs is very useful. A simple remote control activated region hack is great easy to do and doesn't affect the warranty at all and enables you to play all your american dvds with ease(apart from RCE titles).
The player is ready to go from the box simply plug in the scart cable and your all set.
Advantages: Good performance, multi-region hackable Disadvantages: poor range of connections at the back - minor
...newer, stronger little brother, the Samsung 511.
It borrows very heavily from it's older sibling but improves on it in almost every way. Again Samsung have made one of the most attractive looking players on the market. This particular model includes a 3D sound spatialiser. For those of us who don't have dolby 5.1 sound systems this does a pretty good job of mimicking a surround system. The picture quality and performance of the machine is excellent. ... ...DTH-4500 models, along with the Samsung DVD-709, DVD-809, DVD-909, DVD-511, DVD-611, DVD-811 and Hitachi DV-P305e On various Samsung models this hack will also disable Macrovision, but you have to turn off the Quasi-PAL option and set the SCART output type to Video rather than RGB. Always perform a Cold Start before applying the hack below 1. Power on your player 2. Press and hold both the Play and Stop buttons on the player 3. After a short while ...

Advantages: good quality build and picture Disadvantages: could not get vcds or mpeg1s to work
the samsung 511 was my first dvd player and at the time i did not know what i was looking for in a dvd player. If all you want is to replay mpeg2 legitimate dvds then this is a good player with a good build a good range of features a quality picture and a neat and tidy remote. However i could not get it to play vcds even though it says on the front of the player that it does and after trawling though pages and pages on the internet it seems that everybody ... ...make it multiregional so imports can be played, no mp3 playback though, comes supplied with poor quality scart lead to get you going, overall a good player if it metts the requirements for what you want to do.there are cheaper models even from samsung that are better, try the s224 ...

Advantages: Picture,Sound and Ease of use Disadvantages: Macrovision, No CDR's
I bought this from Comet under their price match scheme, £135 not bad for a multiregion DVD player.
I used the handset hack to set it to multiregion, and bingo multiregion works. Stuck in region 4 The Matrix, wow.
I am now buying stuff from Australia and the US because they are so much cheaper. Output quality is outstanding, picture and sound are excellent. Don't have a Dolby digital setup yet, but here's hoping.
It is a shame it does not turn off macrovision or playback cdr's, this is the big downside if you make your own audio cd's. The Macrovision thing is a pain, how many people have more than one TV but only one DVD player, most people.
So far I have found this player to be reliable, accurate, could do with more memory for the layer change, but from what I have read about many more expensive models it does ...
Advantages: Good quality for the price Disadvantages: No SCART lead included
The SamsungDVD-511 is a prime example of a high quality DVD player at an affordable price. For around £140 - £150 you would have to look quite hard to find better quality for the price.
Picture Quality – The DVD-511 gives an excellent quality picture reproduction, the images are clear and it uses MPEG-2 compression (whatever that is!). When you choose freeze frame the image is crystal clear and does not flicker or jump around like some of the cheaper models.
Sound Quality – Dolby stereo sound guarantees that the sound quality is good, if you want the real benefit of this then don’t use your TV speakers, use the ones on your stereo system instead.
Other Features – The system can play DVDs, Video CDs and standard CDs. There is a parental control feature that allows an adult to prevent young children ...
