This is great for people who have HD televisions. It converts ordinary DVD's to 1080i or 720p HD quality. This does not match that of truly HD format because it comes form the original quality- but it is close.
Design: At this price it has an excellent design. It is slim and sleek looking with a great colour combo. The front of the box looks very nice with the circular control unit. The black and silver design should work with most modern layouts.
The rear offers connection for pretty much any setup required. HDMI compatible- great for viewing high quality JPEG's on a large HD screen! If you do not have an HD TV then don't worry. It has SCART and component cable outputs for you.
The remote is very comfortable and the buttons are quite close together. Unfortunately it is lost down inside the sofa quite easily!
Function:
The player will accept a large number of types of discs and formats. It will take MP3, JPEG and WMA which are great for viewing personal items. The cd's can have a folder layout- This is when you go to burn music onto a CD it will ask you to make audio disc or data disc. Data discs can hold the full 700MB of space whereas an audio will hold no more than 80 minutes...
The great thing is that this can playback DivX coded formats. DivX is becoming more widely used and is a free codec for making video files smaller. Great for when you need to fit a video onto a cd but is a bit over 700MB if you know what I mean...
The onscreen menu is very simple to use- just select what you would like to play. Couldn't have asked for more.
The sound quality is perfect- haven't encountered any problems. It plays right in line with the video picture.
Conclusion: Because I cannot find any problem with my DVD player I have given it 5 stars. The picture quality would probably be better in a more expensive player but this does the job perfectly! I would say this has to be the best in class for low cost- high quality DVD players. 10/10!
Advantages: Near HD upscaling at a very cheap price Disadvantages: No virtual surround sound, not all DVD upscale well
...players I discovered the Samsung HD860 was one of the latest models (2006). As I had purchased an HD compatible plasma it needed to have the best available source I could afford for the money and at £65 this slim and modern looking player was a bargain.
The player will output a normal scart signal (composite or RGB) and via the HDMI lead upscale the signal to either 576p, 720p or 1080i respectively (only with an HD TV). What this means if that the ... ...pixels of the DVD and increase them to near full hd resolution.
The results can be simply stunning on a clean or new DVD, older DVD titles do not benefit as much as they contain more noise which does'nt help with the upscaling process.
The DVD comes with a simple remote to access the various menus which includes the audio setup which will output dolby 5.1 if required to a compatible surround amp. Unfortunately there is no option of a virtual surround ...

An HDTV or a High-Def TV requires a DVD player that can deliver equally breathtaking visuals and sound. Samsung's DVD-HD860 can take conventional video and audio signals and upconvert them to breathtaking 720p/1080i quality. Through HDMI" (High Definition Multimedia Interface) Output technology and HD JPEG playback, this DVD Player can also transfer hi-def video and audio to the HDTV without any loss in detail. Just 45 mm in height, it fits neatly into any size home theater system.
