The HD/DVD recorder arrived on time and was set-up and ... ...Suffice to say that the Samsung HR720 has a lot of functions and features, many of which I probably won't use, but still nice to know that they are there.
So far I have no complaints at all - just a minor quibble that the remote control has several keys quite close together necessitating a close look before pressing a key.
A very good piece of equipment and certainly recommended.

My first venture with a Hard Disk/DVD recorder was the Lite-on 5045 but after several problems I returned it for a refund. Undeterred and after further research I purchased the Samsung HR702 from Ebuyer.com at the beginning of March 2006 for £205.
With 80 gigabytes the hard disk capacity is smaller than the Lite-on but still gives an ample 34 hours recording on short play. It records on DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM but will not record on DVD+RW or DVD+R although, contrary to the manual, it will read DVD+RW.
The HD/DVD recorder arrived on time and was set-up and working within 10 minutes. Mastering the remote control took a little longer with frequent reference to the large (134 page) manual but after a little practice I became reasonably competent with the various functions and options. I found the manual clear and much better than many from far-east manufacturers. Recording and playback is easy with good on-screen guides to make the process straightforward.
Some two weeks of use later everything is working perfectly, giving excellent quality recordings and playback. I won't give the specification here as there are many sites where you can get full details. Suffice to say that the Samsung HR720 has a lot of functions and features, many of which I probably won't use, but still nice to know that they are there.

I decide to replace my VCR before it gave up the ghost and decided a HDD/DVD recorder was the way to go.
This one was the right price, and in my opinion looks quite nice - I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but personally I like clean lines when everything is switched off - with only the clock showing in Off (Standby) mode
With the option of saving recordings from hard drive to DVD the 80G drive does not seem too small - especially when ... ...Within 10 minutes of unpacking the unit it was installed and making its first test recording - this includes tuning the channels, a doddle with auto tune, and waiting what seemed like an age for the DVD to load. Picture quality was considerably better than my VCR, which is only about 4 years old.
A minor inconvenience I have found is that videoplus+ recordings don't all automatically have the channel number (Normally this is a problem caused by ...

Our old video recorder was on its last legs, it was chewing up the tapes and whenever I set the timer to record anything it was hit and miss as to whether it would record. So I decided to buy this DVD recorder (much to my husbands delight). It is the best thing I ever did. It is so simple to use. My husband connected it up to the TV and Freeview box in minutes. It auto tuned all the TV stations and has very easy to follow on-screen menus.
Right ... ...playing it back. Then we put in a DVD-RW and followed the simple instructions to format it and then recorded something else. I have been playing about with this recorder for a few days now and I have even edited the adverts out of a program that I recorded. I have copied from the HDD to DVD. I have deleted things from the HDD. I have recorded things using Videoplus, I have even watched something off the HDD whilst recording something else to the ...

Do NOT buy Samsung until you have read this.
I bought a brand new DVD-HR720 from Samsung which had muffled sound. I contacted Sansung who got Martin Dawes to try to fix it. After 2 months with it still NOT working Samsung said I should not have contacted them and told me to go back to the seller!
Yes after 2 months failing to fix it they said it was not their problem! Why didn’t they tell me that at the start?
