Advantages: Highly durable machine Disadvantages: None, it even survives long drops
...I recently purchased the SamsungDVD-R128. I had simple requirements, it needed to be cheap (this was a secondary recorder), it needed to be of a certain size (due to the space it was to fill in a piece of furniture), and most importantly it needed to record in the - format. The main brand you find that falls into these requirements is LiteON, but I had just encountered a nasty situation with two different models of LiteOn product, that meant after years of respect for the brand, I no longer wanted anything to do with them. However this model Samsung machine stood out, it met all my requirements, plus my very first DVD player was a Samsung and almost 10 years on it still works fine.
Ok so lets get technical for a second; the recorders vital statistics were size and this model sits with a width of 43 cm, and a height of 4.9 cm...

Advantages: Plug and play ease Disadvantages: Finding a blank disc amongst all the unmarked ones
...DVD recording is THE way to go. Everything can be done on this recorder via a foolproof on-screen menu system. There are several record modes including extra high quality, standard, long and very long play. Obviously the better quality recording, the more space on the disc is needed.
You can record your chosen programmes by setting the timer manually or by using the Videoplus method (I've never found the codes for this method though) It is also very useful for backing up your old home movies to dvd via the abundance of sockets.
The recorder wil also play the increasingly popular Divx format too.
As someone who gave up on recording to VHS this machine has turned me into a couch potato again....

Advantages: It's cheap Disadvantages: It fails to meet even the most basic of standards
...In the past I have been impressed by Samsung's DVD players. My first ever player was a SamsungDVD 709 and I still maintain that it delivered the cleanest, richest, most lovely picture that I have ever seen from a player. Unfortunately it only lasted me about 2 years before it started glitching and the shop said it would be cheaper to buy a new one than to get it repaired.....and you can't get much cheaper than £35. That's what Dixons were charging for the SamsungDVD-P144. The two adages that a consumer ought to live by apply in this case (and most others)...."Caveat Emptor" (Let the buyer beware) and "You get what you pay for", (no matter what brand name is on the box.)
However, I had been very pleased with the performance of my previous Samsung, and the specification on the P144 looked most impressive. It tells you in big letters...

Setting up was quick and easy.It skipped one channel on automatic channel search but had to use manual channel selection to find it. Played DVD's cleanly. Have not tried to record yet, but reading the manual it looks easy enough. The remote buttons are a more
I bought this DVD recorder after returning my old one to the shop because it didn't work properly. I thought, well hoped that this one would be better. I was wrong.
Every time i put a disc in it the DVD recorder would freeze and not do anything for... more
