Remember when a DVD player was just something you shoved a disk in, and it played it (how boring's that?). To compete with the ever expanding market, DVD players are having to multitask more and more. This one seems to be having a go at multitasking but it's as if it's heart isn't really in it.

Look and Design

Basic is the word. A traditional black look more resembling a video player than a DVD player with nothing flashy or shiny to entertain the easily amused. It's a bit on the bulky side, just like Gordon Brown, (Don't ask me where that joke came from, I have no idea). But then the extra bulk is necessary, unlike Gordon Brown's, in order to incorporate the VHS player.

Function

We'll it works like any other DVD player, you put a disk in and it plays it. The picture is pretty good by the way. But it also has a few other features including:

A VHS tape player. I'm not quite sure why though. The only people who still use VCR are those who can remember when a TV was the latest big thing. And they are not going to buy this, they are too busy telling me how lucky I've got it and how they single handedly stormed the D-Day beaches (Is there a single person over the age of about 80 who doesn't think they won WW2 all on their own?). Oh by the way, for the sake of this review I digged up an old VHS tape and this did play it better than an old VCR would.

Basically the ability to play every single format except for blu-ray. As well as the ability to play DivX, MP3, JPEG and WMA files. (They have to be put on a CD or DVD first). It can also timer record.

Overall

A DVD player with a few extra features but not as many as some other ones do. Average, nothing to wow you (unless you're feeling nostalgic and want to watch some old VHS tapes) , but nothing to disgust you either.

Ok for the price
Review of Samsung DVD-V6800 by sonicview

Advantages: Easy to use, good to transfer video to dvd
Disadvantages: Bulky, out of date, ugly

A tidy little two in one unit with the same features as most other machines in this price band. It plays virtually ever type of video format (not blueray). The remote is simple to use although navigating the menus is slightly fiddly. Its not exactly a slim stlyish machine but it does what it says on the tin. Transfering old VCR videos to dvd is easily done and that is probably the only reason i could see to buy this unit over a standard dvd player. ...
...little slow to boot up the disc and it makes some odd clunking noiss when playing a video (maybe my machine was a bit defective). So its not bad, prob only worth buying if you need to transfer old videos to dvd. If you just want a dvd player look at a named dvd player, sony etc ... Read review
