The camera has 8 mb of internal memory which can be increased to 256 with flash cards. I received a free 32 mb card with the camera and this held 124 high res pictures from our summer holiday with plenty of room to spare. This camera was a birthday present from my husband last June. It was bought as an upgrade from a Kodak EZ 200 digital camera.
I had a budget of £100 and I was looking for camera with a higher resolution, an LCD viewer and a flash.
I consulted my technical advisor (the daughter) and after considering several models she suggested the Samsung Digimax 201. It had all the features I was looking for and at £105.99 from a local photographic shop, it was only slightly over budget.
When I first opened the box I did wonder if I would cope after the simplicity of the Kodak, which, despite it's lack of features, took surprisingly good pictures. However, my fears were unfounded as the camera has proven easy to use. I spent about an hour reading the instruction manual to familiarise myself with the menu system. Anyone already familiar with this type of camera would probably need to spend less time.
The camera has 8 mb of internal memory which can be increased to 256 with flash cards. I received a free 32 mb card with the camera and this held 124 high res pictures from our summer holiday with plenty of room to spare. The pictures looked very good on the computer so I had my favourites printed using an internet printing service. The photos were lovely and cost no more than buying a 35mm film and having it developed, with the added advantage of choosing which to get printed.
The only problem I have found is that batteries seem to last no time at all so I always carry extra sets. It has an auto-off feature to save power and the LCD viewer can be turned off, a useful feature if batteries are running low. There is a rechargeable battery pack available for this camera but this costs approximately £50. I have found the cheaper option of a fast charger and 3 sets of rechargeable batteries adequate for my needs. (I would consider myself an average user - holidays, days out, family occasions.)
The camera comes with MGI Photosuite and Digimax Viewer software on CD and a USB cable to connect to the computer.
Other features include a 2 x digital zoom, movie clip facility - length depends on the amount of memory and a 10 second self-timer.
While this camera is now at the lower end of digital specification, it is still an affordable entry level camera with plenty of features.
The compact 2-megapixel Digimax 201 is supported by 8 MB of internal memory, and upgradeable through an SD/MMC card, so you won't have to worry about running out of memory when you need it most. The Digimax 201 also has a 2 x digital zoom to get you close to your subject and preview and review is instant on the camera's color TFT LCD monitor. Three focusing modes for even greater variety include "Portrait", "Normal" and "Macro". Five Flash modes make it possible for you to choose the best way to illuminate your subject, depending on shooting conditions. Other useful features such as the programmable exposure and five white balance modes help you achieve great results. You can also capture moments in motion with the Digimax 201's onboard movie clip facility which is only limited to how much memory is available. Image play-back on the camera's TFT LCD monitor or an external monitor can be displayed as either single images, thumbnails, a slide-show or movie clip. Download is fast and easy via USB and there is also a helpful and useful software package for further creative manipulation.
