As a digi-cam virgin, I have to admit that I wasn't looking for anything other than a cheapo model which simply took pictures and nothing else. I'd heard that digital zoom was an important feature, and I'd also drawn the line at those really cheapo models that don't even have an LCD screen- what's the point if you can't see what picture you've just taken? So, no whistles or bells for me- just a point and click jobby for not too many spondoolicks, sir.

They all very clearly tell you to download the software (from CD) before you do anything else. You get 2 lots of software with the camera: "Digimax Viewer" for uploading your artwork and "PhotoImpression" for playing with it (more of which later).
Now you can begin clicking away! The camera is a doddle to use: One button flips you between video/still mode 2nd lets you see lots of impressive and informative icons on the LCD screen, or not 3rd lets you bin your less artistic attempts and the 4th lets you view your masterpieces. You can view the stills and video, but the video has no sound unless you watch it on your PC.
A switch lets you zoom in and out, and a circular button does the job of scrolling left/right/up/down through the menu, which is found by pressing the centre of the circle. On the front of the camera, a little switch lets you change the focal length, should you wish to photograph your navel close up, for example.
You can adjust all kinds of stuff. There are different modes for pictures taken at night, of portraits, of landscapes and of fireworks. Sadly, my untrained eye can't make out any discernible differences. I select "auto" and let somebody else do the hard work!
Other features (found under "menu") § Size (from 2272x1704 to 1024x768) § Quality - 3 choices § Metering - focus on one spot, or the average focal length of your pic. § Shooting - take one or two pics per press § Effects - Normal, Black and White or the luscious Sepia. § Frames - What can I say?! Put a naff pink heart round a picture of you in your slinkiest underwear and email it to your boss. Or something. I don't know why people use these… § Sharpness - Soft/Normal/Vivid. Normal sounds good to me. § Save settings - save your favourite mix of the above settings for future use. (Or just use auto- come on, everybody does!)
You can customize your camera to use one of your own pics as a welcome screen, to beep or not to beep, decide how long to be idle before switching off (technology mirrors reality in the oddest ways…), and choose which language you desire. Scrolling through I find: English (phew!), German, French, Korean(?), Italian, Russian, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese(?), Chinese(?), Danish, Swedish, Arabic and one which I can't even guess at.
The camera is light and fits snugly into your hand. It's fun to use and is cheap enough not to fret about too much when you're on holiday. The quality of the pictures is good- obviously not the best, but fine for this price and perfectly adequate for the non-pro. It's perfect for me!
On the down side, I would criticise the battery power/life. AA batteries just aren't up to the job. You can get maybe 25 pictures before changing the batteries, so it's better to invest in a charger and keep some spares with you or you'll run out of juice seconds before getting that shot of your husband's trousers falling down while he's toasting your father-in-law. I would also criticise the instruction booklet. As some of you may know, I am a masochist who usually takes pleasure in reading manuals. But this one is overly confusing. I could re-write the 106-page book in 5 pages. The camera is child's play, so why on earth make the instruction manual like an A level physics paper?
The Software:
Digimax Viewer simply lets you upload your pics and vids to your pc. You get a USB cable supplied with the camera. After installing the CD, plug in, switch on your camera and your masterpieces will appear like magic on the screen. I looked in vain for ages for a button called "save". Sadly, there is no such luxury. You can, however, copy and then paste your pics wherever you choose. The instruction book gives almost no help on using the software, you need to give yourself 20 minutes to play around with it to learn how to use it.
PhotoImpression is a poor man's Photoshop. You can adjust the tones, size, frames and special effects of your photos. It's very simplistic and the fun lasts for about 20 minutes. If you are seriously into doctoring your photos, you will find it pants. If you aren't bothered then it's fine for messing about with sepia or trying to remove red eye (however, I haven't managed to do this ostensibly simple task successfully yet…)
Overall verdict:
Funky little camera, good price, easy-to-use and worry free. Ideal as a first digital camera, and comes in 3 shades, girls.
Advantages: Lightweight, excellent image quality Disadvantages: Small screen, battery life
...can I say about the Samsung A402....basically, its BRILLIANT!!!!! Advantages: Small and easy to use Disadvantages: Gets through batteries very quickly
...items I sell online. This Samsung appearred to fit the bill, and I had been happy with Samsung items previously.
I was pleased when the camera arrived due to its small size and ease of use, but was disappointed that it had no lens cover or case, as I'm now a bit nervous of throwing it into my bag.
Also, I keep finding extras that I like - such as the ability to take film clips with sound.
Anyway, I'll summarise the pros and cons:
PROS
Small ... ...pc is simple
Cheap
Good size viewing screen
CONS
No lens cover or case
Pictures can be a bit blurred, especially in dull light
Battery drainage (but I believe this is common for all digital cameras) - I have 2 sets of high strength rechargeable batteries which are reserved for my camera
The buttons on the camera eg shutter, on/off aren't arranged very well
Overall though, I am very pleased with this item. I paid about £90 for it last year, ...

Advantages: Good value camera, quality pictures and software Disadvantages: No lens cover, plasticky, small screen
Having had one of these great little cameras for just under a year now, I'm happy to say it definitely lived up to it's billing. I paid just over £100 for it in April 2005 and it was worth it at that price, let alone the £75ish you can get it for now!
The picture quality is great, provided you use the right settings. For the non-technical minded among you; don't worry, this is very easy. The circular button on the rear lets you shuffle between flash ... ...and time delays for self-portraits, while the dial around the lens switches between normal mode and close-up.
Battery life is above average but not brilliant, although I use normal AA batteries when lithium batteries (as recommended by Samsung) lasted much longer when I tried them. They're just very expensive!
My main gripe is the lens, in that it has no cover. I tend to put this camera in my pocket or bag, where it knocks against other things; ...

Advantages: I would really reccomend this camera Disadvantages: none
I purchased this camera over three months ago and was I impressed.its compact size fitted nicely into my handbag along with all the other stuff(I'm not goin there) and because it was so light I didn't notice my bag being heavier.
For such a small camera I was really surprised that it had an 1.8"LCD screen so no having to get my glasses out to see what I had captured.it has a 4X digital zoom but I'm not sure what that is for because all the photo ... ...the usb cable supplied have been really really crisp unlike other smaller pixel cameras I have had in the past.
It has a VGA 24fps Movie clip but as of yet I haven't tried that because I have only just got a SD card from E-Bay so that I can store a lot more stuff on.I had the photo setting on the largest size at first but it soon filled up the memory so I suggest you use the next setting the pictures are still lovely and crisp and it's a better ...

Its size is 3.6 X 2 X 1.1 inches, making it one of Samsung's smallest and lightest-weight cameras. The 16 MB of flash memory and up to 516 MB of external memory let you store plenty of images while Normal, Sepia and B & W options give you the opportunity to add special effects to your captured images. Seven white balance options allow you to get true color shots no matter what lighting you're in.
