I decided to make the move to a 'digi-cam' about 4 months ago after yet another load of 35mm pics were butchered by my last camera. The pup's growin and the missus wants her pics ;-)
After shopping around, reading reviews etc. I narrowed it down to either a Sony cybershot 7.0, or the Samsung A6.
Eventually it was the budget that decided, and I bought my A6 for £145 with 50 free digital prints from a local store, At the same time i bought some rather expensive recharable batteries+charger and a 512Mb SD card.
Took it home, out of the box, inserted batteries.... Took a few good pics... read manual... took better pics.
The manual is very well set out, with a few hints for us amateurs. 120 pages of instructions, and descriptions of the features (not the same 5 pages repeated in every language/dialect on this earth).
Picture quality is excellent, i am no expert but i could not fault it day or night, the camera has a 3x Optical zoom + 4 x digital zoom (which works very well for digital).
The camera has 32Mb internal memory (good for about 17 pics at top quality) and an SD card slot upto 512Mb (good for 124 to pics).
The dial on the top of the camera is used to choose between some of the preset modes of the camera (Auto, Scene, Prog, Apature/Shutter priority, Manual, Video, Audio and Night mode)
Auto is pretty much the only setting you need to take good pics + when you half press the 'take picture' button the LCD displays a green square if all appears ok, or will give a symbol of something to check (low light, unsteady hand etc.). This can avoind missing some good shots. The video mode is also handy although on top quality your lucky to fit 15 mins on a 512mb card.
The LCS display is sharp + clear, accessing stored images is a breeze with a thumbnail page option for quick browsing. The menu is easily accessible and self explanatory.
Another feature that really impressed was the 'macro' function, used for taking pics of things VERY close. The detail captured was excellent far better than i expected.
So while the camera may not have the rep of sony's powerhouses the Samsung is an excellent piece of kit for the money.
