After his camera broke whilst in Florida, my step dad bought a Samsung Digimax D103. He bought it mainly because it boasts 10.1 mega pixels, which produces a really good picture. I used this camera on a recent holiday to Lake Garda and I am very impressed with it.

The Samsung website also says that the camera can come with an optional docking station, but the one I have didn't.
The D103 uses SD cards which are readily availably in various sizes. As the camera is 10.1 mega pixels, the pictures take up a lot of room, so you will require a fairly large capacity card. However, the camera enables you to select different sizes from 1 mega pixels up to 10, allowing you to store more photos, but compromising on quality. A 256MB should be able to store about 94 photos at 10 mega pixels.
Capture Modes The D103 has 8 capture modes. These are: Auto - minimal user interaction, everything done automatically Program - manually configure most functions apart from shutter speed and aperture value Manual - allows you to manually configure all functions Record - allows you to record movies (I have never used this) Night - optimum settings for taking photos in the dark Portrait - optimum settings for taking peoples faces Children - your guess is as good as mine (optimum setting for taking children???) Scene - optimum setting for taking landscapes like mountains
The D103 also has a voice record function to add a voice over to still images. I don't really know why you'd want to do this and haven't used it. I also haven't tried the macro function, but I am sure that it is fine for the average user.
Flash The D103 has five flash settings: Auto flash - pretty self explanatory, the camera will decide whether or not to use the flash Auto & red eye reduction - the camera will decide whether to use flash and will also use the red eye reduction facility Fill in flash - basicly flashes whatever the light levels Slow synchro - flashes in conjunction with a slow shutter soeed Flash off - need I say any more?
Self Timer The self timer on the D103 is more sophisticated than most cameras. It has tow times, 2 seconds or 10 seconds. But what surprised me is a double timer function, where the camera takes two photos. This would be useful if there were a lot of fidgetting children, or if someone sneezes.
Effects One of the less useful (but not useless) features on this camera are all of the different effects that you can have. There are different colours that you can make your photo, have it in sepia or black and white, and even more bizarre you can have it in negative (this makes everything really weird).
Playback settings Being a digital camera, you can playback any photos that you have taken. It is really simple to do so, and the screen is more than adequate to get a feel for the photo. You can also rotate images in playback mode, but after a cycle, they return to their original state. This is really annoying, especially when you are viewing the image through a TV. There is a slideshow feature in playback where the camera automatically cycles througfh your photos. The camera comes with both a USB cable and an AV cable for connecting to a TV.
My Opinion I think that this camera is really good value for money, as it has features such as adjustable shutter speed. My old camera didn't have any of this sort of thing. The D103 is perfect for both inexperienced photographers and people who like to fiddle with their photos (like me). However, I would not recommend the camera to people who like really, really sophisticated cameras. This camera is perfect for the average tourist.
Below are some photos that I have taken using this camera. Please bear in mind that because the camera is 10.1 megapixels, the original files were massive. Therefore the photos have had to be shrunk down, and the quality is not as good as on the originals. Still pretty damn good though!
