I chose this as a step up from using the pretty competent Nokia N95camera and i've been happy with it so far. It represents a good budget option for those who want to take decent photos but can't afford the usual £150 you might pay for a good compact.
It came boxed with all the usual stuff you would expect, manual, CD with software and 2 cables - one for the PCUSB port and another to connect to a TV or other similar device. A case would have been a nice addition but notable by absense, though you do get a strap. The USB cable supports USB 2.0 so you can often browse each photo straight from the memory card instead of having to upload it to a PC first, handy for when you want to show people photos quickly.
It's good enough to use as a point and click for people who just want to take simple photos but for those who want to geta little more serious about it there is a lot to alter via manual "M" mode that allows a vastly different usage than the auto modes provided.
Many of the functions are those you might find on more expensive cameras, though obviously being in the price range it is the functions such as ISO and shutter speed aren't as good as you would expect in a camera for twice the price. 8 seconds is ok but 15 seconds at least would have been far better.
I found M mode and auto to be the only modes I use with the odd bit of video recording but this is an individual thing, this means it takes longer to take photos but it's a good way of learning how to get to grips with the more complicated parts of taking photos you would have to deal with using SLR's.
The photos can be very clear but often in low light the shake of the hands is enough to ruin any shot whatever you do to try and stop it. Thankfully it has a mount for tripod use and as it's light you can get a cheaper not so sturdy tripod to use with it, or a more expensive one if you can afford it.
The optical zoom lense zooms in well and in good light even hand wobble won't spoilt the pic, though in darker conditions the zoom reduces the light getting to the sensor resulting in darker pics. Macro is quite amazing and will make you realise human eyes just aren't that good! I took a photo of a leaf and you could see all the small fibres around the torn edge, brilliant clarity and detail.
Sadly it is lacking a focus to infinity option so long exposures in darkness can be slightly blurred. This was a let down in my opinion, wouldn't have taken much to add that function as it does it fine otherwise in good light.
Battery life is ok but you'll stand no chance using anything other than nimh rechargables or lithium batteries. The Batteries that come with it are Duracell Ultras and will give you about five minutes of use if that. Seems to me an intergrated battery would have made more sense. Personally I bought some Sanyo Eneloop rechargables and they typically last a couple of hundred shots each pair, more than enough for most people and if not they are cheap enough to buy a few.
Size wise it's not the smallest compact but allows a good grip, feels nice and solid though the LCD screen is a bit exposed and unprotected where it is. I really do not like the prospect of it breaking one day, why they can't stick a protector over it in the first place god knows, it wouldn't be a problem if covered in a 1mm plastic..I'm a bit concerned about the fact the chassis seems to be external so a drop onto a hard surface could crack it and cause problems. Then again they're not meant to be dropped so it could be irrelevent.
Ultimately I like the camera, once i'm used to how to judge the correct settings i'll move on the a Dslr or maybe even just a batter compact.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to use a camera in average situations, to get more serious though you really need to spend a little more.
For now though I am happy enough with it, Samsung did a good job here for this kind of money.
