I had a Lexmark inkjet printer for almost 3 years and it never worked properly. It kept scrunching up the paper and the ink didn’t even seem to last for 100 pages. At some point I got fed up with spending over £30 each time for an ink cartridge, I just left it empty. I didn’t need to print very often and I could always get it done at work or ask a friend to do it. But then my teenage daughter started to complain as she sometimes needed a printer for her school work. Well, I didn’t want to buy yet another cartridge and sort out a jam after every third page, and therefore decided to get a new printer. After some research, considering my previous inkjet experience and that I hardly ever needed colour printing, I decided to look at laser printers. I soon realised that laser printers had become affordable for the private user. I chose the Samsung ML-1210 as it was a good price and it had consistently good reviews on the internet. Dabs.com offered the printer for the cheapest price (£85 all inclusive), so I ordered through them and they delivered within 3 days – very good service and I’ll use them again.
The printer box was lighter than I expected and it was very well packed. The printer looked and felt like good quality and it was all very easy to install. There was no printer cable, but I had one of the old printer anyway, so no problem for me. The software was easy to install with the CD and I had it set up in about 20 minutes. I printed the test page and the print was very sharp and black. There was only an installation sheet but no printed manual, however soft copy was on the CD. One tip, if you want to print off the manual, work out beforehand how to do more than 1 side per A4 page, to save paper and toner. You only get a starter toner cartridge with the printer when delivered, enough for 1000 pages without toner-save, but as we don’t print a lot, it should last us for more than 6 months. The toner-save function saves about 30% toner and is very useful for our purposes as we rarely need top quality prints. But even this “inferior” print is only slightly lighter than normal print and much better than what I’ve ever had with my old inkjet printer.
I’ve had the Samsung ML-1210 for about 3 weeks now, printed about 150 pages and have had one minor jams (was the paper’s fault not the printer’s) or any other problems. It prints fast and the quality of the print is very good for normal text. Photos and graphics are not very sharp, but then I very rarely use it for this purpose. A full toner cartridge at about £50 is supposed to last for about 2500 pages at normal quality and 3500 at toner-save quality. So far I’ve printed everything with toner-save! Compared to my inkjet printer it’s very economical and so far I’m delighted with my purchase. I highly recommend the Samsung ML-1210 to the personal user who doesn’t need to print in colour.
