I'm reviewing the Samsung ML-1210 for your reading pleasure. A laser printer that is not a recent model I admit but this printer has been in our possession for some time so it can't be all that bad.

THE PRINTER
The printer itself is rather bulky (32.9cm x 35.2cm x 22.9cm) with it being an older model and obviously laser printers usually are bigger in size. It holds 2500 pages of A4 and has 2 options as to where you want your paper to come out. If you're printing a large document your best using the standard out tray however for smaller documents there is a flip tray at the bottom that can be pulled out to allow the paper to come out there. To be honest I don't see the advantage of this and generally just use the normal tray provided. The printer doesn't look anything fancy, it's kind of an off-cream colour (more so now its a little nicotine stained, ooops) with a grey plastic piece sticking from the output tray so when your document comes out it remains straight rather than flopping over the back and getting bent. ML-1210 is written on the front in Grey followed by 2 LED's that light up accordingly. They are ERROR, PAPER, and DATA. These are self-explanatory and I won't insult your intelligence by explaining what they are for. Then there are three buttons next to these. Toner Save, an option to use less ink if your not too bothered about the quality and have seen the price of a new toner!! Cancel/Reprint, if you need to cancel the print job and Demo, again self-explanatory. The printer is classified as a personal laser printer and is compatable with a PC, Mac or Unix (whatever that is!)

SPEC
The Printer itself had a great spec in its time but as the years have gone past its not quite top dog anymore. It has a printing speed of 12 pages per minute (I can't see why you would need it any faster), 600 dpi for a sharper image and the one-piece integrated toner is said to be environmentally friendly and easy to install. I've only ever replaced the toner once and I must say it was an easy task, even for me which is saying something. There are 8MB of RAM installed and it has a 66MHz processor, basically this all indicates the amount of memory and information it can hold. It will work with the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows 95/98, Apple MacOS 8.0 or later, Red Hat Linux 6.0, Microsoft Windows 2000 / NT4.0, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows XP and you can use it to print paper, transparencies, envelopes or card.

SETTING IT UP
Setting up your printer is a fairly easy task but none-the less a scary task for those of us who aren't particularly technology friendly. There is a power lead that slots into the back and then into your plug socket and another wire that needs to be plugged into the back of your tower unit. Now setting up my PC was fairly easy as its wires are colour coded but as we bought this printer separately it is not. Depending on your level of knowledge or the quality of your tower unit there should be a picture of a printer enticing you to plug your lead in there. If not you'll need to be careful to match the pins in the printer adaptor to the ones in the back of your unit. If all else fails ring you dad, partner or in my case little brother and get them to come round and plug the damn thing in for you!!

You'll also be provided with the installation disc which you put into your D drive and it should automatically load. If not go to My Computer and manually double click the D Drive logo to get it started. An Installation Wizard will then take you through how to install it and its as easy as 1,2,3. I'm not kidding, a child could do it (then again most kids these days can use PC's better then Bill Gates himself so maybe I shouldn't be so patronising!!

ADVANTAGES
LONGEVITY: This has to be one of the printers biggest advantages, like I said I've had this printer for well over 2 years and in that time I've only had to replace the toner once, plus its due changing again about now. I don't print massive documents constantly but I do carry out quite a lot of printing, especially for my college work and soon uni work so I'm impressed with this.

QUALITY: The quality of the documents printed and the speed at which they print is perfect for my needs. I can't see how any of the newer models could have an advantage over this one as I don't need anything more. For people who are constantly printing massive documents they may prefer a printer that prints a little quicker but on a whole there's only so fast a printer can go.

DISADVANTAGES
NOISE: One disadvantage with this printer is that when you turn it on you know about it. It whirrs and clicks like there's no tomorrow and once you turn it off it feels like an eternity before the buzzing stops reverberating in your ears. In the spec it states that it is 46 decibels!!

PRICE OF TONERS: Now to be honest I think that this a problem with Laser Printers in general and maybe I shouldn't just blame my poor printer for this but the cost of replacing the toner a couple of years after buying the printer is almost as much as it cost to buy the damn thing in the first place. On the other hand I have just said the longevity of the toners is something to shout about so maybe you can't have one without the other!

OVERALL
I'm not a computer buff and certainly don't know everything about printers but if someone offered me this printer again at the same price I'd buy it. It's a little on the large side and noisy as hell but it gets the job done and I'm more than satisfied with its work ethic!!

If you want to get yourselves one of these be prepared to shell out around £58.00 plus postage and packaging if you buy online. You get a 'starter' toner with this which will last around 1000 pages of printing and all consequent toners around 2500 although I'm sure mine has gone fro longer than that.! The toners are £30 each which on reflection probably isn't that bad but then you could get half a new printer for that!

Thanks for Reading.
Be Good.

A really useful review.

I hate all printers, just get so fed up of searching around to see how they're priced, and then the realisation that you're just going to get completely conned on the ink

I think the noise would be a big pitfall for me... maybe because I've got used to the ushed tones of my cannon and couldn't go back.
