I bought this printer mainly because of it's low cost but also because I liked very much it's predecessor, the ML-1510, which my girlfriend owns. It's cheap and very easy to set up.
If anyone owns a ML-1510 and thinking of upgrading to the ML-1520, I don't think there's much point. They are pretty much identical in terms of its functionality, but the ML-1520 is more square-ish and is the standard grey colour (more 'manly' if you like). Personally I like the ML-1510 better in terms of looks and is slightly smaller and lighter.
The pros. The quality of print (especially if printing text only) is superb, even on the starter toner that's supplied with the printer. I have not printed any photos so I can't really comment on that but I have tried printing road maps from the internet. Again the quality is great and I can clearly nake out the individual roads and road names.
What I like about this printer is the different ways you can feed in the paper. You can put it in the in-tray as per usual or you can manually feed it in through the front. This is very useful if you want to print on card (so long as the card is not too thick) and you wish to keep the card straight. On this point still, there is a flap at the back of the printer where you can lift so that paper, or card, will output straight rather than curling through the top. I'm sorry if you're confused by that explanation but hopefully you'll know what I mean if you've seen pictures of the ML-1520 or even in the flesh.
Now for the cons. Although the printer is cheap and very good value for money, the replacement toners are fairly expensive. A better alternative is to get a bottle of toner ink dust and refill yourself. This only costs about £5 - £10, a fraction of the cost of a new toner. But be warned I am not sure if this would in any way invalidate your warranty! Problem with said method is that the toners are only recommended to be refilled up to about three times.
Another problem I have encountered is that when I print a large quantity of pages (forty or above). When it gets to about page thirty there is a blank vertical line about 5cm wide down the centre of the pages where nothing has printed but there is text either side to it. I don't know why this is but maybe the printer becomes overheated and malfunctions partially because when I leave it for about half an hour or so, it goes back to printing normally.
Generally though, I think this is a great printer for general printing use in the home. Although I probably would not recommend it for offices or if you print large quantities regularly.
