We have been after a small mono laser printer for a while and once we had bought the laptop computer we wanted a printer that was a bit more portable and easy to use. My husband is a self-employed courier and he prints his invoices out each week and we also need to print out his accounts and vat returns each quarter. Also we print flyers and needed a laser printer because of ink smudging on the ink-jet.
We settled on the Samsung ML1610 mainly because of its cost. I did a google search and this came up as a cheap but good model.
TECHNICAL STUFF +++++++++++++++
It prints up to 16 A4 pages per minute with 150 mhz processor for
immediate printout. 2mb RAM installed.
It is classed as "ultra light" being 5.5kg in weight.
Easy to use and maintain, front access for toner cartridges and paper insertion.
Toner save button which alleges to save up to 40% of toner.
Comes with a 1000 page toner to start you off and then you buy 2000 page toner cartridges.
Instant Installation with no need to restart
150 page printer tray with cover
Well that's the technical stuff out of the way, what about the cost?
COST +++++
I purchased mine from Ebuyer for £48.99 to include VAT (it is 41.69 net).
This is about average price, although I have seen them on sale for £75-£80 in some places. P C World has it for £49.99 store collection only.
Ebuyer delivery was £3.83 for Super Saver which took a week, so the total cost to me was £52.82. (Next day delivery would have cost £7.89). I was happy to pay less and wait for it. Delivery was by Citylink.
I also had to buy the USB cable to connect it to my laptop, this cost 79p from Ebuyer and this was by far the cheapest I had seen.
Toner cartridge from Ebuyer £30.07 .
INSTALLATION AND USE +++++++++++++++++++++
I had the printer delivered to my office as I am out all day. Ebuyer do not allow this, but I left a note on my door for Citylink and the driver took it to my firms other office near my home. When I went to collect it the printer was easy for me to carry, so the weight is good.
I took it home, removed the packaging, usual polysterene and tape.
I installed the printer cartridge, which was very easy, You open the front cover and it just pushes into the front until you hear it click.
Then I installed the paper, I had to pull out the tray at the bottom front of the machine and put the paper into the tray being careful to push it under the guides.
Next, plug it in and switch it on at the wall, also there is a switch on the printer itself. Then connect to my laptop with the USB Cable. The laptop registers immediately that there is new software attached and asks for the installation cd to be put into the cd drive. A few clicks and the printer is installed. I installed the drivers and a printer monitor. It asks do I want to print a test page, yes I say and out it comes!
The printer then asks if you want to register it online, so I said yes and was whisked off to Samsung's website where I registered the purchase in order to obtain the warrantee.
Simple to install and use.
MY PERSONAL OPINION ++++++++++++++++++++
The machine is neat and very easy to use, however don't be fooled by the picture shown above, it will take up more space than that because of the paper sticking out of the front. Around half of the A4 paper tray sticks out the front of the machine. If you wanted to store it as shown in the picture then you would need to take the paper out after each use. See my picture at the bottom for a true idea. It looks more like the old HP Deskjet printers then!
I found it really easy to install, very quick with no problems. The printing speed is quick, certainly good enough for a small business with low printing needs.
The toner cartridges are nearly as dear as the printer, but 2000 pages would last us a long time, so we would only need one cartridge a year, if that.
I have also read that you can refill the toner cartridge for £10-£18 so I might give this a try when the first toner runs out.
I have read on a website that the printer is estimated to last around 50,000 pages, so in total each page would cost less than 2p per printed page which is good value.
The toner save function is useful and has an indicator on the top of the machine to show this is working.
I would recommend this printer to anybody who has need for a laser printer. I wouldn't recommend it for high business use, but for small business/personl use it would be ideal.
DONT FORGET to buy a USB cable as it doesn't come with one!
Very well structured review, good headings and seperators. All the information I would need is here, thanks for the review good job.

Very good review.
I work with samsungs on a daily basis and find them usually to be very reliable machines. The ML1610 is not the best of the bunch by far but it is an economical if not used heavily. Be wary of doing your own refill of the toner cartridge. The cartridge has a lot more to it than just toner and you may find just filling it does not give you a good print. (this i know as I actually work in the remanufacturing industry and know what these cartridges can be like) You see companies on the net offering toner to refill but it's just a quick buck for them. They cannot guarentee you a perfect result. Good luck with it anyway.

Nice review there - I am always wary of samsung stuff after a string of disasters.
