Living in a very small house, with a small and hyperactive one year old means that a laptop is needed rather than the conventional bulky PC that lived in what is now the nursery.
After hours of searching we decided on this, the Samsung N150 JA03 Notebook. The main reason we bought this was that we got a fantastic deal, and we realised that a Notebook would suit our needs just as well as a laptop! We really just wanted this to upload photos of our son and keep in contact with relatives! So after looking at the specifications and what the package had to offer, this seemed like the best option available to us.
I must admit I know how to work a computer, but when it comes to all the background stuff I am completely useless. My mean reason for buying this Notebook was that it was modern looking and light. The fact that it stated it was scratch resistant was an absolute bonus, with a small child running around the house and wanting to “play” with mummy and daddy’s things means that this was an absolute must! We didn’t want to spend our hard earned cash on a lovely new Notebook only to have our son have it scratch to pieces in the first five minutes. On the whole it has remained scratch free but there are a few marks!
Now for all the important bits:
Bold Battery Life
Supposedly it has a battery life of up to 12 hours, now in theory this is correct if you leave your Notebook alone and don’t touch it or let it do anything at all! In practice we have found that the battery life is “average” as they say! If you have a mains plug near where you will be using the Netbook you will be fine, however if you are hoping to use this “on the move” make sure you have charged it up completely the night before – the battery life seems to run down quite quick in my opinion! So the battery life could be a little better with this but we can’t have it all our own way all the time!
So far, so good! We don’t seem to be having any problems with the memory so far! But then again we aren’t using this for high graphic games or large items of work; it really is for emails and pictures. There are slots so that you can add additional memory, but at the moment we really do not need to do this, but if we ever do we will update and let you know what we think!
It is fast at loading what you need, which I find a complete bonus as there is nothing worse than sitting there and waiting for something to load up, especially when you are in a hurry!
I have to say although it’s not as powerful as maybe some laptops that I have tried, the performance is still pretty good. There has only been a couple of times where the graphics have come across as a bit glitchy when a couple of windows or applications are open. I have never had a problem though installing anything and it has always seemed to handle anything I have thrown at it pretty well.
The only real negative I have is the sound quality isn’t very good compared to others that I have tried and therefore this can put people off.
The keyboard on this notebook is great – the keys are really easy to use and it is lovely to type on! However, no matter how hard I try I cannot get on with the touchpad AT ALL! Luckily you can combat this little problem with the use of a wireless mouse – although you will have to fork out for one! Fortunately, these are availability widely and are inexpensive!
The great thing is it is light so it means that it is comfy on your knee! So while the other half is watching what they like on the telly (soaps (for all the ladies out there) or footie (for the modern day “bloke”)), it means you can join them on the sofa and do your own thing! Quality time but with the added bonus of being able to do your own thing!
This snazzy little Samsung is also very easy to navigate! I work with a computer all day so I know how to get around it but for those people out there who are not too great with the whole computer thing this is a great little number for you, but then again that is probably down to Mr Gates for making Microsoft Windows so user friendly.
We opted for this version on our Notebook, but at the time of purchase you could have still have Windows XP. I like Windows 2007, it is easy to use and navigate and the icons are a nice size and easy to manage. We decided to use Office 2007 as well, which we purchased separately, and I still cannot get on with it! It is supposedly more user friendly but after using the “traditional” office for many years trying to get used to this new way of working is proving difficult! I suppose however, it is more down to me than the actual package!
Other Bits and Bobs
Built in Camera – This is a great little function that has helped us out loads. Although it is not the best quality, it does mean that our family can see our little boy grow up, which is amazing! We are not claiming to be David Attenborough, so the quality does us fine for what we want! If you want high quality pictures/movies then this won’t do you!
Built In Modem – This is brilliant news for anyone on the go! You can get connected any where there is Wi Fi and with all the free connections around at the moment it means you can get connected anywhere you like! Word of warning though – I would advise that you still be careful with anything that involves log-in or personal details – there are a lot of fraudsters out there! Protect yourself! The good thing is when I have used the Wi-Fi it has always had a strong connection and hasn’t broke on me just yet – touch wood!
What was the packaging like?
The packaging that the notebook in wasn’t too bad compared to some appliances you can buy, but it was pretty bog standard. Had the usual fold up box, polystyrene to protect everything in side and came with an instruction manual as well.
So why choose a Samsung over anything else? Well I have a Samsung television and had great pleasure with this and so far with this Notebook my experience has been second to none. I can safely say I am a fan of Samsung products and I have only used it once but the technical support with Samsung is pretty first class as well. I had a problem with this Notebook with setting up a network and straight away the technical support helped sort it out for me and it was just great to have that kind of support. This Samsung Notebook looks pretty good where as it has style and class with uncompromising anything and delivers exactly what it has intended to. It is lightweight and thin and the overall look is just unique and personally I really love the way this looks.
Now for that techy stuff

To Buy or Not To Buy – Now that is the Question!
I am pretty sure that there are far better Netbooks out there than this one we purchased – but it must say this is pretty perfect for our requirements!
Light weight – check!
Easy to store – check!
Easy to use – check!
Battery life – Could be better
I would have no hesitation at all in recommending this great little number to any of you! With its modern look and easy to use features it is a great little buy for anyone out there! Just remember – shop around! Obviously if you are after something for a purpose other than just the bog standard stuff in other words graphics and web designing then maybe this Notebook would not be the best option to you. It really does depend on what you need to use it for and you need to know what size screen you would like and what is the maximum budget you have to spend. Bear these questions in mind when looking around and you will get the best purchase possible.
