This netbook has to be one of my favourites, boasting a solid case, 10' screen and a fast bootup to Windows XP. Having played around with a few netbooks recently all boasting similar specifications, I can honestly say that I was not disappointed with this offering from Samsung.
There are some negatives that let this review down slightly, so I will get these out of the way first.
1. The "\" key is located on the right side of the keyboard next to the "/" key. This takes some getting used to when swapping from a normal keyboard and you tend to select this by accident instead of the shift key.
2. There is no mobile broadband sim socket, so you have to buy one of the mobile broadband usb sticks which is fine but it would have been neater to simply keep a sim permanently in the netbook.
3. The BIOS on my netbook was out of date and needed updating.
4. Only one memory slot so if you need to upgrade the memory you will need to discard the original memory stick.
That's the nasties out of the way.....!
This machine came with windows XP pre-installed, a 160gb hard drive and 1 gig of memory. I added another gig to the notebook shortly after purchasing, and this was easily fitted using just one screw on the bottom of the case. One particular aspect of this notebook I like is just how silent and cool it runs. I can hardly even hear the hard drive!
As a Microsoft Technet subscriber I thought I would see how this netbook runs windows 7 ultimate, and I was not disappointed. It just works! The only gripe I have is that the samsung website just shows their software as working with XP, however some of the software for the camera etc work perfectly well when downloading.
The whole feel and solidity of this netbook, as well as the large keyboard and screen helped to sell this to me. The manual is in electronic form but the netbook comes with all the DVD's necessary to perform a re-installation if you completely mess up. A small portion of the hard drive is reserved for the restore partition as well, so you don't ever need the discs unless of course you upgrade the hard drive or play around partitioning.
On initial boot the Samsung software kicks in and asks you to perform a backup of your current system and offers to partition your hard drive for you. I chose the advanced options and allocated all the hard disk as one partition instead of reducing the size for the backup. I did this because I had a USB memory stick and that is where my backup data will reside. I would rather keep maximum space for all my files.
My conclusion all in all is that I would highly recommend this Netbook to anyone looking for a robust machine to take around with them. It is not going to set the world alight with performance but then it's not designed for that as is any netbook.
