I fear that there are many younger people reading this review that may not even remember that dim and distant past. The time when you ended up with hundreds of out of focus pictures, decapitated grannies or drawers full of films waiting to be taken for development!!

There is no need at all for me to go into the many benefits of digital cameras, instead I will tell you of our experience of an efficient, handy yet inexpensive little camera – the Samsung S760.

This camera is actually my son’s camera; his sister bought it him for his 13th birthday. He had received his own laptop for Christmas so she thought that a digital camera would be an ideal present.

What we wanted for him was a camera that wasn’t TOO expensive (he does have a penchant for falling into the canal – several mobiles have gone to a watery grave!!), was easy to use, compact and at least 6 mpix. We wanted a good ‘entry camera’ to start, what will probably be a long list of cameras he will own.
This term ‘entry camera, is one we picked up when we were looking for the right camera for Jack (and his sister’s pocket) – and this is just what Samsung market this little camera as.

Jack’s camera is the black model but it is also available in silver and pink.
The design of the Samsung S760 Digital Camera is very modern and it is very compact at 93 x 62 x 26mm and weighing only123g.

It is ideal to slip into my son’s pocket when he goes to a football match or for that special moment that may pop up (like when THAT girl walks around the corner) or simply to have handy to show any pictures he has taken. Simple, yet so very effective, the Samsung S760 Digital Camera offers a great starting point for anybody looking into the world of digital photography.

The camera has 7.2 mega pixel, which we felt was fine for Jack and certainly higher than the one on his mobile phone, a 3x optical zoom lens and an LCD screen over 2 inches square where you can check what your picture will look like and play it back once you have taken it. The camera has Samsung’s own ‘face recognition technology’ which is designed to give a sharper picture without any messing with dials etc. It also has high sensitivity ISO 1000 technology, self-shot option, digital image stabilization and video capture (which Jack uses to embarrass his brother in law with a video of him singing on the ‘Lips’ X Box game!!)

The camera certainly feels a robust little item and has a minimum approach to buttons – all you get on this model are a round button controller on the rear with 4 other buttons to find your way the menus (these are easy even for blind old Oldchem to read) and a small oblong ‘rocker’ button to operate the zoom lens.
The only other buttons are situated on the top of the camera there is a little wheel for the different modes, a shutter release and a power button,

Very easy to capture quick and sharp images, the S760 has a 3X optical zoom and 3X digital giving good focusing The lens also retracts and covers itself when the camera is switched off.

You will need another SD card as the camera only has 11mb internal storage; we picked up a 2GB SD card for £3.99 off E Bay – this holds 1000 images.
You also need two AA batteries to work the camera; Samsung recommends Ni-MH rechargeable or High Capacity Alkaline. We have two digital cameras so we always keep a good supply of rechargeable batteries in the camera bag, although the battery life does seem quite good on the S760.

The camera comes complete with a USB cable and the necessary software although Jack prefers to download his photos through his card reader.
Initially we had a little problem with picture freeze when downloading the pictures, the last one always seemed to freeze. After formatting the camera though this was easily rectified.

The RRP for this camera is £139 but is widely available for less than £50 so shop around!!

IN CONCLUSION

If you are looking for a no fuss digital camera at the lower end of the price range I woould recommend S760 digital camera is a good call. Picture quality is good, it is easy to use and shutter delay times are good.
This is a good straightforward digital camera, ideal for a youngsters first ‘proper’ camera.
