In the Samsung SF3100T I’ve finally found a value for money feature rich machine after hunting around for a couple of weeks for a combined ‘fax/copier/phone/answer phone’. One of the key criteria was A4 plain paper, inkjet engine, small footprint and easy to use, because the entire family need to be able to use the fax and also change the consumables and paper when I’m not around. I aslo wanted a reasonable handset a hands free microphone for normal business telephony.
Interestingly I trawled around several main white goods outlets and found it difficult to get a machine from stock …there appeared to be very few types on offer. I could have short-circuited the whole process by going mail order but I wanted to see the goods and kick the tyres. Staff in the Comet, Curry’s, Dixons type stores haven’t really got much of a clue and can’t demonstrate the equipment merely, best I found was their ability to read the specification from the display blurb…. oh dear. I avoided going to a professional outlet because I knew what would happen, I’d end up buying something for £500 that was super complicated and full of things I didn’t need. Ain't that always the way ?
I finally bought the fax from Comet for £178.95 (includes VAT) which I think was a bargain, the price included onsite warranty for 12 months from Samsung which is extendable for 2/3/4/5 years and you have 28 days to decide. I decided not as an extra £60 for warranty for another 12 months seemed excessive to me.
I just set the machine up last night, took me all of 10 minutes from box to sending my first fax. Very impressed by the size and style of the fax it sits well on my study desk and looks very stylish next to my slim laptop and desk lamp. The machine is very simple to set-up and needs no elaboration here; the inkjet cartridge is so simple to install, as is the A4 plain paper. The modem is 14.4kb, which makes for a reasonable operational speed. Also making a copy (or several) couldn’t be simpler….drop the item to copy in the tray and press he copy button. Simplicity.
Here’s a run down on the other key features for those that are interested:
·80 page holding memory ·15 page ‘anti-skew’ document feeder (this works really well) ·Five one touch and 50 speed dialling locations ·Group dialling, this eliminates repetitive dialling to multiple locations ·Delayed fax sending so you can send at a later time ·Last three number redial ·Ink save mode and a simple drop in (low cost) inkjet cartridge ·Standby mode power consumption only 10 watts ·Built in digital TAM ·Answering message for TAM ·Access from remote location ·Message paging ·Call monitor ·Hands free microphone
