You're joking, he's not writing another mobile op?
Well I am, and I have a very good reason for doing so. The last op I wrote was on the Motorola T720I, and what a piece of junk that turned out to be. Bits fell off it, the battery packed in and a badly designed, poor excuse of a phone died. So I got thinking... this time I was going to think about my future phone, and not buy on impulse the most feature-packed thing I could find. After much thought, I settled on this, the Samsung A800.
It's small with all the right curves in all the right places. I hate the phrase "aesthetically pleasing", (because most people use it only to show off) but this phone really is. The A800 has a bullet-like small silver shell. The size is one of its main selling points. It fits easily on the palm of your hand, has about the length of an index finger (8cm) and width of half that, (4cm). The phone, unsurprisingly, is ridiculously light at only 68g, that's lighter than 70g of feathers! I really should mention that there is also a small aerial protruding over the top of the A800. It is unobtrusive, though I have the unfortunate habit of unscrewing it, dropping it, and of course losing it!
On the outside of the A800 is a small screen which has a blue backlight and tells you the time, date, reception and remaining battery juice. This is all dandy, but the most important thing this display does is show who is calling. Meaning you can chose to answer, by opening the phone, or reject the caller by pushing a button on the side. This is great, and it really is quite liberating squeezing that side button when "Mother in law" is calling. Another nice touch about the front is the small eclipse shaped light that flashes every now and again to reassure the owner. You can chose the colour of the light, but when someone calls the thing goes mad, flashing every colour under the sun! A great touch for those, like me, who are easily pleased.
You may have realised that the A800 is a flip phone, which is wonderful. There's nothing better than simply popping open the cover with one hand: perfect for posing. Now, I was duped into thinking that the T720i's flip was good, until it started to squeak and slowly break, so I was pretty sceptical about the idea of going "flippy" again. Regardless I took the leap, and am happy to say that the Samsung's flip really is sturdy and well made. After opening it half way, the cover confidently raises itself up to reveal the splendour of its innards.
Which brings me neatly on to the phone itself. You might be disappointed to learn that you will find no colour screen behind the silver façade. Instead there is a comforting blue blacklight, and a good-old fashioned non-colour display. The menus are relatively easy to explore, having brought up the main menu, you scroll right with the circular keypad to find the different categories, like messages, phone settings, fun box etc. Unsurprisingly the patronisingly named "fun box" is where the games live, which are not revolutionary, but a good enough to waste away 5 minutes. There are the normal types of game, "shoot the spaceship", "avoid the spaceships" and "shoot from the spaceship". Thrilling, if you like that kind of thing.
Also to be found in this fun box is... the "media box" (I don't really understand the fascination with boxes!) This is where you can find some of the ring tones, and backgrounds for your phone. The great thing about the ring tones is that they are polyphonic (can play many tones at once to give gorgeous harmony). These are great, as you can find all the annoying classics like the Cancan or jingle bells. They aren't all unpleasant, though, some of them (my personal favourite being the rainforest bird noise) are actually quite easy on the ear! The bizarre thing is that only a few of the huge array of tones are kept in the media box. The backgrounds are pretty boring to be honest. You've got the star signs, and a picture of a dog, but that's about it.
The phone itself really is top quality. Despite being small, it is not at all weak, similar to a bulldog, but much better looking. I have dropped the phone a number of times, even with the cover open, only for it to receive the odd small scratch. The battery is remarkably slim and slots nicely onto the back. It also, is small but powerful with a life expectancy of 150 hours or 3 hours talk time, before it needs to be resuscitated with a charge from the mains charger (supplied). As should be expected the reception is very reliable, and you can hear the person you are calling, as clear as crystal. My only small concern is that there voice, though clear, is not very loud, so this phone does not prosper in bustling, loud environments.
The keypad on the A800 is very well designed, and not to bunched up, despite the size of the phone. To access WAP there is a special i button. I do not use WAP very often, though when I have it is very comprehensible, and easy to navigate.
The text messaging, such a fundamental part of any mobile, is equally as easy to understand. The "T9" predictive text is ruthlessly efficient, and has caused me no problems at all. To top it all off, when you send a message there is a short animation to reward you for spending 10p.
This phone has got so many little extras that it really would be monotonous to list them all. But who cares? It's got a calculator, calendar, alarm, timer, stopwatch, memo pad, to do list, and a money converter. Sorry about that, but it had to be done.
Now comes the crunch, the price. I bought the A800 on a Vodafone pay as you go for £110 and then unlocked it myself to any network. This is without doubt a very reasonable price, as you get all the usual things chucked in: charger, strap and hands-free.
The thing I like most about the A800 is its modesty. This phone does not claim to be a gadget packed, technological masterpiece. It is, however a small work of art, which does everything anyone could want it to do. It is unpretentious and discreet for the businessman, small yet cool for the teen, and a triumph of simple efficiency for the middle aged, technologically challenged parent.
Advantages: compact, light, slim & easy to use Disadvantages: downloads for games & most music not available, not a colour phone or with a camera

So there you have it! This compact phone will fit into any girl's handbag (or man's trouser pocket). It's silver without interchangeable covers. It's nice cute, sleek & sexy & will never let you down. I personaly am 100% happy with mine, but I would like to be able to change the games, add some better ...

...can you say about the Samsung A800? It's stylish, cute, sexy, curvy, manly and reliable. Samsung have got it spot on this time. Providing a phone which appeals to both men and women and kids the young and the old, it's a phone for everybody.
The first thing you notice is its size, only standing at 80mm (plus a 20mm ariel), 40mm in width and 22mm in depth, so it easily fits in to a pocket or handbag, which is an advantage over other bulkier mobiles ... ...fantastic T9 predictive text, the Samsung A800 recognises certain combinations of letters and uses this to predict the word you want to write. If you don't like this method it is simple to revert to the normal ABC mode, where each number on the handset represents certain letters, ie, 2= A, B, C or the number 2. I find this takes longer, unless you are one of these text wizards like my daughter. There are three games, X-Fighter, Fortress and Space ...

Advantages: Small, droppable, easy-to-use, Disadvantages: As with all fast-moving technology, it's now unimpressive
...seems to provide and try Samsung instead. It is not all that different. There are easy-to-use menus, predictive text (important to some to save RSI in fingers!) and an inbox big enough to keep texts from even the most communicative of users happy.
THE GOOD
I am quite a careless person when it comes to possessions so it is not uncommon for me to drop mobiles and cameras quite frequently. It has survived a few falls, without any technological damage, ... ...but that's entirely understandable. Afterall, my phone is USED, not displayed.
My phone is rarely turned off, only in places such as hopsitals or aeroplanes convince me to physically switch off the mobile, so this happens less than once a month, but it doesn't mind in the slightest. Silence can be activated by holding down one key, which is useful but not immediately apparent - get that manual out. The battery officially lasts for 3 hours talktime ...

In my opinion Samsung are unbeaten in terms of the appearance of their phones and the A800 is no exception. It is a small and very cute flip phone. It comes in one of several different shades of silver/grey - mine is 'dark silver'. Also on the outside of the phone is a small service light that flashes different colours (blue, orange, violet, green, sky blue, yellow, white) , a button on the side to reject incoming calls, and a small ...

Advantages: Looks and Ease of use Disadvantages: Wap and some phone book features
...for ease of use the Samsung system is not far off and in looks is way way sexier.
The phone itself is the now familiar Samsung ‘clamshell design’ in silver. This phone features a dual screen so that with the phone closed up you can still see the time and date, the amount of reception you are receiving and the battery life left on the phone. You can also see who is calling you prior to opening the phone so if you are feeling antisocial you can screen ... ...pretty much the smallest phone Samsung make today with the S300 edging it out in depth by a measly 2mm. Apart from a Siemens I have seen it is just about the smallest phone I have seen on the market so far so if you are a tiny-phone-o-phile like myself this is one for you.
So enough about the outside lets open ‘er up. As you open it up the phone is bathed in a pale blue light – as with the Nokia 8310 Samsung have elected to move away from that dingy ...
