Oh dear Samsung, where did it all go wrong?! An aesthetically beautiful piece of technology; tiny size (17mm thick!) and weight. How could you have forgotten to remind your designers that beauty is only skin deep? It's what's 'inside' that counts as well!
THE GOOD... Let me explain. I fell for this phone primarily because of the above features. It sits really comfortably in the palm of your hand, and its sleek silver design is modern, stylish but not too threatening for the more conservative/technophobe potential owner. Understated 'cool'. As I said above, the phone really is tiny. I spent the first two days of owning it looking at it not really believing how small it is (but then again it did replace a real old brick!) Having said this though, the keys are still large enough to press accuratley. (In case you're wondering, the dimensions are 45x17x111mm. SMALL!!)
What
else is good? Oh yes, the colour screen. Very high resolution, and I would say probably about the best you're going to get for the asking price (£100 ish). The screen savers are animated and fairly cool... but I'm not sure if it can receive picture messages to use as wallpaper??
Calling. Reception is generally outstanding, can hear callers clear as anything.
Memory. Holds 500 names in the phonebook and 60 text messages (10 on card, 50 on phone memory.) Plenty for anyone.
Polyphonic ringtones; plenty to choose from (but ringing volume is very loud, I think, even on lowest level.)
Games. Comes with two (but I have only played one, which is a highly addictive version of 'Pong').
THE BAD... Right. Here come the niggles. 1. The service light. There is a little light in the top left corner of the phone that falshes intermittently, and you can switch this off (I did because it really did my head in). BUT when you receive text messages, it flashes until you pick up the text and this you can't change. Am I being overly intolerant?! I like to be able to set up my phone exactly how I want it *stamp foot* ! Which leads me onto...
2. Again; receiving text messages, the message tone sounds, but not only does it sound once, if you don't pick it up, it will sound repeatedly until you do. Who wants to be bullied by a phone?!
3. Now we come onto the major oversight by Samsung. WHY IS TEXTING ON THIS PHONE SUCH AN ORDEAL? I love predictive text as much as the next person. But really, not including a 'dictionary' or the capacity to 'learn' words is just plain stupid. Next problem; in texting you have to switch between all five modes sometimes to say what you need to. Predictive, numbers, small case, capitals, punctuation.... ARGH!! Very mystifying also is the way you can only find a comma if you go into capitals and press 0 about 4 times. WHY MAKE IT SO COMPLICATED?! Another minorly annoying fact is that if you accidentaly press the end call button your whole text is lost before you know whats going on.
4. Battery life. Not great; about 3 days before recharge with low use (few texts, few v. short phone calls.)
AND THE UGLY... (Ok, ok, hands down, this phone is not ugly. That was just for the sake of completeness.)
If this phone were human, it would be one of those people who knows they're good looking, and therefore thinks that they have no need to try in other departments. I was seduced, but now I'm wise to its ways! It could have been a major seller for Samsung if they'd only put a little bit more thought into it and not got lazy on the details that really matter when you've got over the 'ooh, new phone!' factor. If the problems I pointed out above were rectified, I would without a doubt consider trying the phone again.
Definitely think carefully before buying this phone; it may be worth spending a little more to get a more user-friendly model. However, if you're looking for ultra-lightweight and compact, aren't too bothered about texting and are more tolerant than I am to flashing lights and noises, then this phone could be just right for you.
Thank you for the experince, Samusung, but I'm afraid for now I'm sticking with my Nokia 3310.
