The inevitable death of my Nokia N95 following serious software issues meant that I had the opportunity to borrow my wife's mobile phone while a replacement was forthcoming. What started out as a replacement and a temporary solution to my mobile phone needs has firmly become MY phone and indeed when the replacement from my phone provider arrived it was presented to my wife. The reasons for my love of the Samsung SGH G600 are quite simple, it works perfectly as a mobile phone, has lots of quirky and interesting features and it is the easiest piece of technology I have ever managed to get my hands on.
Like all mobile phones these days, the Samsung SGH G600 is tiny, and considerably smaller than my N95, with the unit weighing just a fraction over 100 grams and being perfectly pocket sized with dimensions of approximately 10 x 5 x 15 cm. Despite the small size to the unit the screen is very large taking up around 75% of the front of the unit, bright and easily visible to even me with my fairly poor eyesight. The screen is so large as the front slides up and down to reveal the keys, and when slid back down it locks the unit to stop any unwanted or accidental calls.
The menus are really easy to navigate, with each sub menu being represented by a colourful and relevant icon. Adding new contacts, accessing SMS and MMS text messages and checking the diary became second nature to me within a day or so of playing around with the phone and that was without reading the instruction manuals that originally came with the phone. As well as having the usual features such as a 5MP camera, built in FM radio and Internet access, the phone can be personalised with wallpapers that can be either downloaded from certain websites or copied from the pictures taken on the phone, the ringtones (polyphonic, real and MP3) can be altered and the vibration alert will have you grinning for ages.
Most importantly I find that when making and receiving calls the volume of those speaking to me is perfect when at the mid volume setting. There is no need to fiddle around altering the volume while struggling to hear what the other person is saying, something I had major problems with when using the N95. Reception quality is always top notch as well except when out in the wilds while there is a lack of mobile phone masts so there are no complaints on that score either.
I had the choice of receiving a new N95 with software patches to ensure that it didn't continually crash but instead I'm happy to stick with the Samsung SGH G600 as it has been a breath of fresh air to a man who has previously used Nokia phones for the last 15 years. I will continue to use and abuse the Samsung SGH G600 until the day is finally gives up the ghost and then if still available I would buy another.
