My dad gets a new phone every year when its time to upgrade. I have never been keen on technical phones with many features as long as my battery lasts long enough to get me through the day, and that I can send and receive calls and texts.
This logic went completely when my dad said that I could have his phone when he upgraded. I did a lot of research into the phone and liked what I read. In fact whilst looking around for a new phone a year later Carphone Warehouse were still promoting this phone saying that my dad was 'mad' to be getting a new one.
So what makes this phone so spectacular I hear you ask...
My first impressions on seeing the phone was "oh no not one of those annoying slider phones". In the past I have hated them and vowed never to purchase one, so luckily it was free and as the saying goes "don't look a gift horse in the mouth". Three days later I don't think I could go back to my previous phone.
The phone is very stylish and at about 10cm in length and 5cm wide it fits perfectly into a bag or pocket and fits most mobile phone cases. Prior to receiving the phone many reviews I
had read commented on the weight of the phone. I personally think the weight is perfect it is heavy enough to realise it's in my bag/pocket so that I don't lose it, but it is not too heavy compared to most phones. The small size however is what I appreciate in a phone and the 100g phone is no problem for me.
The phone looks expensive with the shiny silvercasing and cold metallic feel. The screen is clear and due to the fact the phone slides up and down the screen is large enough to view and manage videos and pictures.
I had not expected such a clear and crisp display and after a while of browsing through the settings I noticed that the screen could display a 'dynamic' picture of Big Ben that changes to depict the time of day or a large calendar. It is clear to see that Samsung have clearly put a lot of effort into the detail. On opening the screen it is possible to see the clouds moving, birds flying past and at night a few shooting stars go by. The picture is so quaint yet very appealing. I also like the way a fountain pen writes the number, it's just another way of making the phone that little bit more unique.
A new phone would come with an instruction manual however my dad had lost it and I found myself using the phone 'from scratch'. After powering the phone on I was prompted by an 'installation wizard' to set up the phone or skip this stage and do it manually. I felt the wizard would be the best option and in about 2 minutes my phone was ready to go. The menu is very easy to use and through trial and error it is possible to see what is available and personalisation is simple. The keys may be in a different place to most other phones however I realised that after 2/3 hours of playing I was so used to the features that I was navigating without so much as a thought - demonstrating how easy it is to use.
I am usually the first person to say a phone with a decent camera is useful but it's certainly not essential and if the phone is useless at calling or sending/receiving texts then it's just totally pointless. Two months ago when my hamster died I felt a bit annoyed that all of the photos I had of her were of poor quality and blurred. I usually only managed to get a blurred picture of her back end as she ran away and my 2 megapixel camera clearly had not worked very well at all. Tonight I sat down with the camera and through trial and error I was able to use the camera to take a multi-shot picture of my new hamster, a hamster can be near on impossible to capture on camera as they do move a lot, never stay still and are so fast after clicking the 'take photo' button they have moved. The multi-shot function allowed me to take nine high quality photos. It wasn't until I transferred them onto my PC that I realised how amazing the overall quality was.
The 5 megapixel camera produced over 50 perfect photos and in my opinion could easily win a contest between some of the specialised digital cameras on the market. The 4 x zoon is an additional feature that I have made use of, I can see the phone being a nifty little addition to my daily life. The camcorder is also amazing and unlike other cameras if you stop filming and recommence it will carry on from where you left off making a more professional video clip overall.
I have sent a few messages this week, made and received several calls and for a believer in simple, easy to use, basic phones I have been more than impressed with this phone. I have been amazed at how easy it is to answer a call and that the speaker is so clear and crisp despite being out in the wind I could hear the conversation perfectly.
It is possible to make a call without sliding the phone up and the quick dial numbers make it much easier to contact regular contacts. I found sending and receiving messages very easy and also noticed that you can set a reminder to sound every 2 minutes if you haven't heard the message alert the first time around. I was a little disappointed to find that I could not use my own message tone and was limited to the 5 pre-set tones provided with the handset; this is a very small issue with an amazing phone so there had to be something wrong.
The CD supplied with the phone is another feature I have become quite fond of. I have managed to add short MP3 clips I have created from a larger file. This means that I can store more ringtones and I can also cut out unwanted parts of a song, so the ringtones are most effective.
The CD also makes it easy to move files from the phone onto my PC and vice versa. Whilst listening to the radio the other day I played with a few options and noticed that it is possible to record clips and place these on the computer. A few times in the past I have heard something on the radio and wanted to tell others about it, now if I record the show they can listen for themselves.
The G600 is not short of features and with a calendar, calculator, Bluetooth, stop watch, image editor, image stamp, world clock, converter, timer and voice recorder the phone is like a pocket organiser. The phone does have a browser however I find this very slow and dread to think how much it is costing me to load each page a couple of minutes a time and have given up on this feature.
With a phone such as the G600 I expected the battery to run out rapidly, however I charged my phone for the first time today and I have been using the phone since early Monday evening. I have taken many pictures, sent and received several texts and called a few people. I have also played with all of the features, games and radio. My dad said that it should need charging for about 2-3 hours every 2 days to get the optimum performance. I considered this to be very reasonable considering its range of features and the amount of use it gets.
I have already enjoyed 3 days of use from this phone and despite its age (1 year) it is still going strong albeit a few scratches around the sides.
I wouldn't look twice at this phone in a shop due to its hefty price tag of between £150 and £190 (although if you are looking to upgrade any time soon it is available free on most contract packages).
The phone still holds its charge and lasts at least 2days with moderate use. I must say the camera is what makes this phone unique for me. My own digital camera has a 5 mega pixel specification and despite my fast reactions I am yet to get a picture of my hamster rather than a blurred picture of her bum. The camera amazed me with the quality and features available.
All of this combined with clear crisp graphics, a user friendly music centre and a radio I am truly satisfied. With all of this in mind I can see why sales assistants in mobile phone shops nationwide are saying that the G600 a year on is still and exceptional phone.
