for the last 2 years Ive been using a smartphone spv c500, it's perfect for me as very often in my work I sit around in my car waiting for the rain to stop, the smartphone I have has a bookreader, a divx player and windows media player, it's fantastic... so whats this got to do with my new samsung j600?! It means it has a lot to live up to. how has it shaped up? Well firstly it was locked to 02 who I despise so £15 later it was unlocked, not a good start but you can buy them unlocked.
The functionality of the phone takes a bit of getting used to especially if youre not used to a slider. the four way joypad is programable but the shortcuts are pretty much what I use. The four touch sensitive buttons on the front panel are very sensitive which is a problem as the right handed one puts you online. This isnt a problem when the the dial pad is up as the phone is locked.
once the dial pad is down the phone unlocks providing you with access to all the features. The ones that I use are messaging, on which you can write up to 12 message length that's 1846 characters. There are no smilies and the '&' character is not available, pity. A little note at this point, you cant change the message tone, real pity.
The media player is great, the sound quality is superb and with the excellent samsung PC software you can also convert videos to watch, which makes the micro SD card slot very handy. The media player is fairly easy to use but if youre downloading music from your PC it's best not to use the software as there is no option to download to the SD card and the 20MB internal memory fills up quickly, instead go into my computer and choose what should be an E drive or maybe F, that will be your phones SD card, double click on it then copy the music from your PC to the music folder.
The camera, 1.3mp, is for your basic media messages, as I have a 6mp digital camera I prefer to use that for memorable pictures. The video camera on the other hand is handy, it's only 176 x 144 but as it records in mp4 format you can download it to your PC or the internet, which is handy for all you youtube fans!
I dont use the internet so you may have to find another review if that's your thing. The bluetooth is useful and you can change your ringtone, using any music format, mp3, wma etc. I'm not really into specs so check out the samsung website.
Ok so what's my recommendation? I bought this phone brand new for £40, another £15 unlocked it (there is no code for these phones you have to take it to an unlocker) another £8 bought me 1GB of memory so £63, for that I have a MP3, MP4 player, a basic camera, an FM Radio, internet access, a calculator, a phonebook, a calendar, a couple of games, I can text my friends, and lets not forget a phone! I bet your ipod cant beat that for value!
Please note though some things will annoy you, messaging is not quick, if it was locked to 02 you will never get rid of their startup pics or settings, and surprisingly there is no email, the touchsensitive keys will cost you money as if your right handed you will be regularly conected to the internet (another02 money making scheme no-doubt!).
So which do I prefer my smartphone or my samsung? well I have to say even though my smartphone is user friendly, the samsung looks great and provides enough entertaining features to win.
