At last, the waited day had arrived - the day when I was able to upgrade my son's mobile phone.
It is six weeks since he decided to go on his kayak with his mobile in his pocket, and so he had been using an old phone with his sim in, this did NOT suit his 'strret cred' - I mean at 13 years of age you have to have the right image ( or so he thinks!!) So off we went to T-Mobile to see what he could get.
There was no way I was uping his contract enought to get the top of the range phone's he was after( in two years he has had one phone die in the washing machine and the Lancaster Canal has done for two more!!)
In the end, after about an hour ( just how long do kids need to look at phones ??) he decided on the Samsung SGH U900 Soul.
APPEARANCE
The result of our 1 and a half hours in T-Mobile came in a small box which held
The phone itself Headphones A warranty booklet A samsung fun club booklet Two samsung studio disks A computer to phone USB cable
Now I am not a big phone expert - all I look for is one I can ring or text off, but I'll have a go to get as excited as the younger generation seem to get for their phones!! It is a nice looking phone that measures 105.9 x 49.5 x 12.9 mm, 112g, and it has a reasuringly weighty feel for a small phone. The screen is a fairly large, measuring approx. 2.5" by 1.5", and instead of arrow buttons there is a small square touchpad screen .As I found to my discomfort the left button opens video calling and I got quite a shock to see myself looking back at me. The phone is black and brushed silver - and ( what got my son quite excited) you can alter the colour of the touchpad in the settings, Samsung call this 'Magical Touch' !!
WHAT DOES IT DO?
As I said earlier - all I look for is a phone that makes and receives calls and texts - and maybe take the odd photo - but for those who look for more in their phone ( and understand it all!!) this phone includes the following functions:
Judging by the excitement this phone seems to bring it all works well - my son has spent days 'playing' with the editor to personalise the phone to his satisfaction. The phone slides open to reveal the keypad which locks when you slide the phone closed.
The 5-megapixel camera has 4x digital zoom - and according to my son is 'cool', certainly the pictures he has taken have been of a good quality, his dad had a play with it and was quite impressed that you can change the picture size, and do some editing - as well as setting a timer for photos - although why he needs all this on a phone when he has a top of the range digital camera I don't know!!
The mp3 player uses Bang & Olufsen technology and seems to be of a decent sound quality (Buty again why does he need this with his Ipod touch??) It also includes a FM radio and headphones are included.
The phone has 100 Mbytes memory although my son has put in a memory card from an older phone in tje MicroSD slot on one side, and the internet connection is quite fast. What I have noticed though is that it does need charging frequently. .
COST
The contract I have with T-Mobile for this phone ( which came free with the contract) is an 18 month one that gives him 200 minutes and 400 text messages a month. I have been with T-Mobile for years and always found them a very good company to deal with.
All I wish is that this phone came with an alarm that sreams when my son approaches water !!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Super slick, stylish, easy menus, does everything you want Disadvantages: Easy sending of blank messages, backlog due to slowness of loading.
