The Samsung Z500 has 3g which is excellent, only its fairly new and no one I know has it as well. This is a waste of the technology because you're forced to wait until a friend or relative also gets 3g. I've not been able to use the 3g, on the other hand I can say the interal VGA camera is very good with good quality imaging. I thought it would be very poor quality.

Appearance The phone is of a good size as some flip phones, such as the LG phones, can be a bit bulky. I was a bit disappointed because I wanted the phone in black but the O2 stockist told me it was only available in silver on O2. I'd recommend checking this before signing on the bottm line which was my mistake.
It does look very sleek and stylish though in silver. However, it doesn't have that WOW factor when you first see it. The front of the E720 looks much more modern with the external mp3 player keys. There are external keys for volume, camera and an area for a memory card. Overall the phone is very nice to look at, but I personally think it looks better in black.

There are the usual options available on the menu, such as messaging, call log and organiser. This phone also has bluetooth, i mode (Internet), video recorder, voice recorder, mp3 player and also other features such as a world clock. The external camera is 1 mega pixel. The camera has many different setting and effects where you can change the contrast, size and also add clip art to the image. The quality is not as good as I had hoped. The quality on the D500 is far better. It's ok as a camera phone as the images are clear, but not to the standard of other phones on the market. This has put me off the phone a great deal because I've been used to such excellent quality beforehand. Importantly, this phone does not have flash available. However, there are different settings such as multi-shot and a timer.
The front external screen displays messages, but does not show missed calls after the call has been missed. It shows a missed call on the internal screen, but on the external screen it only displays for a few seconds. It does show time, battery, signal, alarm, vibrate and any messages. There is also the option of adding a picture to the external screen, a welcome message or a clock face.
The Samsung Z500 allows for caller picture id also. Importanly, this feature is only available to contacts on your phone, not on your SIM. This can be quite annoying as I prefer to keep my contatcs on my sim incase I change my handset. There is the option of copying all contacts to phone but this uses memory.
One of the nice features of this phone is the buttons available at the top of the handset . One button allows you to go directly to i mode and one button is a quick menu for call log and messages. This is a time saver from going through the menu.
I have been quite surprised with i mode with is the internet or WAP. I have had handset with WAP available and never used but the service on the Z500 has impressed me and I would probably use it again. Other handsets with WAP has confused me and I've not bothered to use it at all with the fear of being charged while its connecting. This feature looks very user friendly.
Overall, the Z500 has very nice features of average or good quality. Nothing which has made me sit up and pay attention though. Although, I will say that this phone is very easy to use in terms of the menu and call log. I like that the call log shows how long each call lasts and when it was received or dialled. It helps to keep track of your minutes if like me you are on contract. There is also a seperate feature showing call times and costs.
Problems One big problem, the alarm is not reliable. In fact it's very poor. The past two times I have set the alarm to wake me up for lectures, it's failed to go off. It'll go off when you test to see if you've set it right, or when you're showing someone it doesn't work, but typically, when you actually need it for something, it's a dud. Obviously, not everyone uses the alarm but I use the alarm often throughout the day as a reminder. This is a major problem for me and is effecting my decision to keep the phone. It's futile having a phone you cannot use.
Another problem is the camera. It's average quality and maybe with a bit of fiddling I could get it perfect, but quite frankly, in this day and age we shouldn't have to change and alter every minor setting on our handsets. For the amount we pay as consumers, this should already be made suitable for use.
The instruction manual is very vague on certain things, such as caller id. It doesn't ofer any guidance on how to attach an image to your SIM contacts. It offers basic introductory information which is useful to some users.
The battery life has been ok for me, I have charged it twice in 5 days, but I haven't used the mp3 player to any great extent or 3g calling. It seems reasonable but not as good as other handsets. The stand by time is 270 hours and talk time is 3 hours. I doubt this is actually the correct information and seems a little bit hopeful to me.
Some people have complained about the external camera button causing images of their pockets and hand bags. I haven't had this problem either but this is something you'd expect if there's a button on the outside of the phone. No handset is perfect.
The Z500 is very limited, for instance you can't adjust the colour of the wall paper or background. It comes as standard in blue. I have looked int the instruction manual and through every option in the phone and I can't figure out how to change it. If it can be done, its not very simple to see how. Also, the volume of messages and incoming calls is not loud enough. I've adjusted it to the maximum but I still miss calls which I would have heard on my previous phone.
Overall, this phone hasn't caused me any major problems, with the exception of the alarm. It looks good and I'm very pleased with the quality of voice clarity on the phone. The settings are very loud and I find myself turning down the volume of a call. This can't be said for the incoming call volume though which is becoming frustrating. With the exception of the internal camera and i mode, this phone is almost an exact replica of the E720. The menu layout is the same as well as many of the features. In fact, in my opinion, the E720 is perhaps better than this phone.
The Z500 has been a bit of a disappointment. It is nothing more spectacular than any phones of the market before. The quality is not better, nor is the reliability. There are some features I prefer with the handset being a little bit more modern. However, I would recommend getting a better deal on an older phone. There is little difference between them.
OK, so I've decided to write about my phone. I know, this could be boring, so I won't be upset if you just click a "very helpful" further down, without having read the whole thing. I mean, what are the chances that the Ciao members rating this have any interest in my mobile phone what so ever? very little probably. I know, you may or may not believe this, but a friend of mine found it outside a busy station, half under a car. After having waited a week for it to ring, to discover who the beauty belonged to, she asked me if I wanted it, as the prepaid card inside was not her operator. So I did. I know, you'll think I'm naughty, but do you know what would have happened to it if I had taken it to the old bill? It would have been sold by ...

Overall however I did stick to using it for a year and got used to the battery life, a nightly charge seemed to do the job although it still died several times late evening. The pictures still print nicely on a photo printer and ...

...to the latest handsets that samsung are making, although for a clamshell design this is one of the best looking.
The phone fares quite well to damage, the black and silver do not scratch easily in pockets, although marks, scratches and fingerprints can all be seen clearly in bright sunlight. I did manage to break the cover for the headphone port when trying to open it for the first time and snapped half of it off, which did need glueing back together.

One area in which i was disappointed was the features, having had a samsung D600 before this phone, i did notice that samsung had left out several features, such as timer, stopwatch, and that the theme cannot be changed from the default blue colour. ...

...too.) isn't to great so samsung put a memory stick upgrade slot in it so you can add like another 512MB's (That's LOTS) using MicroSD cards.
GPRS is support as is WAP, Bluetooth, infrared and USB.
Message types supported are SMS,MMS and EMail.
The screen is fairly big (176 x 220 pixels), nice and bright, TFT so shouldn't be effected by sunlight, and in my experience isn't, it even uses a mind boggling 256k colours!
The camera is 1MP.. not great, ... ...It uses 2G (phone standard) but has the new 3G technology built in, so you can use video chat etc. Great if you use it, I don't, if you think you will be the same or just want more battery time read the problems section at the bottom for how to turn off 3G.
It weighs 95g, and is tiny (89 x 44 x 24.5 mm) that's makes it the smallest 3g phone available (or was when i last checked).
It's external display shows new message present or missed call and ...

The Samsung Z500 flip phone - welcome to the new era of 3G video calling from a small sized phone - although not without its drawbacks it has to be said!

The phone also comes with mp3 player, loudspeaker option (ability to make/receive calls while not holding the phone), camera (1 mega pixel), video, voice recorder, personal organiser, Bluetooth and fully WAP enabled. ...
