Description --------------- I was impressed with this piece of kit when I unpacked it. For one I didn't think it was that heavy, perhaps not the lightest ever made but then at least your are getting some Samsung quality. The one thing I did notice was that there was no handle to hold it with. A lot of monitors have a recess to get your fingers in to allow you to carry it, no such luck here though. Assembling the monitor was easy, attaching the base stand took no time at all and was well described.
In the base stand there is a large loop hole at the back. Being an idiot it took me a while to work out that this was actually a cable feed. You run all your cables via this whole and thus wont have to suffer the ugly sight of messy cables hanging about
Once you have setup the physical stuff its time to install the CD. To be honest, you don't actually need this. Windows XP picks up the monitor without any trouble. The CD has some additional drivers and Samsung utilities which all in all are not actually much use other than to take up space on your hard drive. I reinstalled my PC recently and decided just not to bother. You can use these programs to change the resolution and to rotate the view by say 90 degrees (just in case you feel like using your computer whilst lying on your desk). Otherwise the CD contains a good set of manuals should you need to look at them.
In the working day this proves to be a very good monitor. I cant honestly say I have had any trouble with it whether it be editing images or writing docs the screen always works well, displaying everything perfectly.
Screen adjustment can be done by a series of buttons on the lower part of the monitor and via an easy to understand and use menu. Even the button quality is good for a change. However, the Samsung is self managing so you rarely have to go in these menus to change anything. Otherwise you can change the usual stuff like position, size and location along with the hue and saturation for your colour requirements.
17" TFT Monitor The monitor has a 17" viewing are which for me seems to be pushing it a little for size. I need to be able to see a large viewing area and this just isn't quite big enough for me. Having said that I guess you can't blame the monitor for that as I should have got a 19" 12msec Response Rate 300cd/m2 Brightness 600:1 Contrast Ratio Overall the monitor has a very good high quality picture definition. Characters are very easy to read on the screen. 1280 x 1024 XGA Maximum Resolution I was a little disappointed with the resolution settings. Whilst they vary from 800x600 to 1280 x 1024 and use these very well, the monitor could have done with having a better override quality. I have on occasion moved it up to 1600x1200. Whilst the monitor can take this and lets you actually select it, it cant handle it. Every time the screensaver comes on and you switch it off the monitor re syncs for about 10 seconds. Also, the characters are displayed just slightly out of focus making it very bad for your eyes. Having said that I don't think you can blame the monitor for that as it was probably not intended to go up that high on resolution. Changing the resolution is quick enough for you not to have to think about anything whilst its completing. 16.2 Million Colours Pretty standard. Compared to other moitors I have used I would say that this displays colour very well. Pictures from my digital camera look as good as when I was taking them. Dimensions
381 mm Height 370 mm Width 175 mm Depth The dimensions of the monitor are great. There is only a small surround / frame around the edges so 95% of what you see in front of you is actual screen. This gives the monitor that extra quality look
Summary and Overall ----------------------------- Not a bad monitor at all, in fact very good. As is normal with most Samsung products you get the feeling of superior quality. Finish is excellent with good quality plastics al round. Screen view quality is also top notch whether writing a word doc or playing a game.
Advantages: Relability, Build quality, Fairly attractive, Leading brand Disadvantages: Sound quality, Picture quality, No. of inputs, Menu system, Lack of freeview, Age
...Secondly, there are little things Samsung just haven't thought about. When I use the screen as a PC monitor, I have to ensure I change the channel on the TV BEFORE I turn off the computer. Why? Well, for some reason, when the monitor loses its VGA input, the menu and source buttons become totally useless. It just sits there flashing the power light, waiting for the computer to come alive again. It won't allow you to change the source (or do anything, ... ...be 5 times faster than that!
Don't get me wrong - I like Samsung products. My house is filled with plenty of them. This particular one, though, is way out of its time. You'd have to be mad to pay more than £100 for this, you really would. ...

...had a dislike of Samsung products, after owning some in the early 1990's. I thought they were rubbish!
I am delighted to say that the Syncmaster 710MP has shattered that illusion admirably, it really does feel like a quality piece of kit.
I have owned this one for about a year, during which time it's been terrific. By the time you read this article, this particular machine maybe slightly old news. But if you are thinking of getting your hands on ...

Advantages: cheap, reliable, fairly good specs Disadvantages: heavy, difficult to carry
I bought this monitor about a year ago and I have so far had no technical issues with it. The monitor is of a good build quality and has a quite sleek modern look. The main advantages were that it was cheap, only about £180 at the time, it had good specs (12ms refresh rate) and had a quality brand name. I have so far no found any dead pixels on the screen which is very good as lots of LCD's nowadays have dead pixels. It also has a fairly good brightness and refresh rate I have not noticed any ghosting during gameplay. The software provided is also fairly satisfactory and is updated on microsoft windows update. It can be used in either portrait or landscape. I found the portrait mode very handy for typing work as I like to see the whole page.
The only problem I found was that the ...

The Samsung SyncMaster 710 MP is an excellent all round monitor. It offers a sharp crisp picture, good responce time 8ms and it has built in stereo sound speakers as it also doubles as a LCD television.
The LCD monitor comes witha remote control, has the option of hanging it on the wall should you want to use it as a TV rather than a monitor. The monitor has 1 scart socket as well as a TV aerial input, and 1 s-video input.

...and NEC, but this latest SAMSUNG is definately the best performer.
The monitor is very elegant with a silver border, certified TCO03, the response time is very low, 12ms, I use it manly for games and watching movies and I can assure you that there is no ghosting, only a slight amount of blurring that disappears once you eyes get used to it.
I reccomend using it at the native resolution 1280x1024 and to use a DVI cable with refresh rate set @ 60hz
