With following inputs at the back/Side of the screen.
* A 15-pin D-Sub cable for PC Input * Power Lead * Audio Lead * Remote control & Batteries * CD containing drivers / manuals etc.
Setting Up….
Setup is very easy for both the computer input and the TV.
Computer input is made via the supplied 15-pin D-Sub connector and a connection from the Speakers-Out port on the sound card or motherboard to the back of the monitor to enable the use of the built-in speakers.
When first connected, the monitor will check the resolution and refresh rate and if outside the supported settings, will display a box in the centre of the screen indicating the optimal settings for the device. You then have a minute to change the settings to a supported range before the monitor stops displaying the image. Should the settings being attempted be so far out of range that the monitor is unable to display an image, just the warning box will be displayed, and it will be necessary to start the computer in "safe" mode and alter the display settings. Full instructions for this are included in the documentation.
TV Setup is very similar to most other TVs, connect up an aerial, select "menu" on the supplied remote control, select you country and format (PAL for the UK) then select "Auto Store" to automatically search for and store all the available TV channels.
Display Quality ….
The display optimum mode is 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz with a max of 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz. The refresh rate choices aren't huge but I am running at 70hz with no visible flicker.
Brightness is very good at well below the maximum setting which seems to be set by default, and the display can be automatically altered to the suit the display by the use of the "MagicBright" button on the remote control.
Picture quality in Office applications is good, text is clear and sharp. Pictures and Movies are displayed clearly and fluidly with no jerking or loss of image. The 8ms response time means that the monitor copes with games admirably.
In TV mode the picture quality is excellent, no ghosting, clear bright colours and the sound quality of the speakers is very good. With the addition of the SCART input, DVD/Video etc can also be viewed and DVDs are played with no problem or loss of picture quality.
The Look and Feel ….
The appearance of the monitor is very good, the 17" Screen is positioned at the top of the case with the speakers and controls located underneath. For connection to a computer means this lifts the viewing screen to a comfortable height.
The Monitor is finished in a brushed silver finish and comes with a tilt-able stand and VESA mount points for wall mounting using a standard VESA mount.
On the front, there are controls for Power, Volume, Channel and also Menu function, Source (input) , MagicBright and Auto Picture Adjustment. This means that all controls (except Teletext) can be operated without the remote control.
In Summary This is a very good computer monitor that provides clear, bright screen without any flicker. The TV is as good as any dedicated TV, with full Teletext and automatic tuning. The remote control is simple to use and uncomplicated.
Overall a very worthwhile monitor at a very affordable price
Advantages: Excellent TV for the money. Very good brand. Disadvantages: Annoyance with finding your input source
The Samsung Syncmaster 711MP is an excellent second TV for a bedroom or office. The picture and sound quality are as good as any LCD (non HD) TV that I have seen. The connectivity is excellent, although it does only have one scart socket which can become an annoyance. It also has a PC In socket, allowing it to double up as a computer monitor. I have used it with some fast moving games, and its dealt with them very well, with no noticable ghosting. ... ...of the input sorce. If you have several things connected into the TV, you press the source button to get to them, but you have to keep pressing the button through the pre-programmed order, which is at times slow and annoying. Overall though I would highly recommed this TV to anyone looking for a secondary TV. ...
