The acquisition of this product came about by accident. I had an IBM, which I loved. It had an external floppy drive though, and when my son decided to move it out of his way, he put the floppy drive on top of the keys, and tried to shut the lid. (Ouch!)
So, with a cracked screen, which the insurance company were unable to replace, they offered me a Samsung V25 in it’s place.
I cannot say that I am sorry. Although I loved my IBM, this really is the bee’s knees in comparison (after all, the IBM is pretty out of date at only 3 years old).
***About Samsung***

***The V25***
The V25 has the latest Intel Celeron and Pentium 4 processor. It claims to have the latest in cooling technology, and I have to say, when those fans get to work, they are pretty cool!
The notebook itself is slim and lightweight. It comes in a lovely silver colour, and really looks pretty trendy. I’ve had loads of comments about being paid too much!
It has a 14” TFT flat display, which goes right to the edge of the lid.
***Specifications***
OK, if you understand all the jargon (which I don’t – I had to get my husband to explain all this), then here it is:
• Intel® Celeron 2.4GHz processor • Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional/Home Edition (one or the other) • Intel® 845GV core chipset (?) • 14.1"" XGA (1024 x 768) TFT display • 256MB PC-133 memory • 30GB UDMA hard disk • 16bit SoundBlaster compatible audio SPDIF digital audio output with 5.1 surround sound • Microphone input port • 8x DVD Rom and CD Re-writer • Li-Ion Battery with up to 2 hours life (it usually gives me up to 3 depending on what I’m using it for) • 2 X high speed USB 2.0 ports (Ideal for a flash memory stick) • 1 x VGA port • 1 x S-Video TV output port • Parallel port, serial port • Internal 10/100 Ethernet • Internal 56k V.90 modem • Symantec Norton Anti-Virus • 2.9Kg weight • 320 X 265 X 39.5 mm
Note, there is no floppy drive on this notebook. I have invested in a flash drive, which is tiny, and fits on 128MB (Floppies hold about 1MB)
***Picture quality***
I have to say that I was really impressed with the quality of the graphics. Having recently upgraded my PC, this is every bit as good.
***Sound***
I frequently play music while I am working, so have uploaded loads of music onto the hard drive.
I usually play music through either Windows Media Player or Musicmatch Jukebox. If you play the music through the speakers, it does sound pretty tinny. You certainly couldn’t turn it up for others to listen to.
Having said that, if you get yourself a pair of headphones, the quality of the sound is pretty good. It’s no Harman Kardon, but it’s reasonable enough to listen to while you work.
***Battery***
The battery seems to last over the 2 hours stated. If I’m not working on it solidly, and playing music through it at the same time, I can get over 3 hours out of it.
It is easy to insert and remove. Remove the battery cover – this just has a little catch you slide, and the cover comes off. The battery just slides in and out, and then you slide the cover back on.
***Battery Life – advice***
Every laptop computer I have ever had, and my father for that matter (totals about 8 between us), we have had problems with the battery life after a few months.
Try this – Charge the battery fully and remove from the laptop.
Whenever you are working near a power socket, use the lead from the mains. Take care to back up your work regularly as you won’t have battery backup in event of a power failure.
When you don’t have a power point, use the battery, but discharge fully before recharging.
If you follow this, you do run the risk of losing work in the event of a power failure, but your battery should last a lot longer. It works for me.
***Power Cable***
OK, so you’ve bought a nice lightweight notebook. So why does the box weigh a ton? The power cable could hold the answer. This really surprised me. The AC Adaptor is really big and heavy. It’s not surprising when you think about the power it has to put through to run this machine. You need to bear this in mind when looking for a lightweight machine.
The AC Adapter comes in 2 parts. My last one was attached along the whole length of the cable, but this one disconnects at the adapter.
***Keyboard***
The keyboard feels quite robust. The keys are sunken so that they don’t rise out of the board, which is great for typing. The keys are springy, and feel of a really good quality.
The mouse is of the square touch pad type. I struggle with these, but most people tell me they prefer them to the button type mouse. The mouse itself is quite responsive. I often lose the cursor, and find it somewhere at the edge of the screen. The speed can be adjusted via the control panel if you can’t get to grips with it. There is also an option you can turn on whereby you can press control, and it highlights the pointer for you to make it easier to find.
I also find that on occasion I have moved files without wanting to. When you highlight a file, the mouse can be so sensitive that it picks up and drags the file.
There is a scroll button on this notebook, which I find really useful.
***DVD & CD Re-writer***
OK, so far I have only watched 1 movie on this. The quality is pretty good, and I didn’t find the picture stalling at all. The sound stayed in sink with the picture.
The CD ROM works well, and I have not yet had any problems working from the CD ROM. I have had cause to write to CD ROM before I got my flash drive. Once you get the hang of how Nero works, it is pretty easy. I didn’t have any failures.
***Hard Drive***
The V25 has 30 GB hard drive, which I find is quite ample; in fact, it’s a damn site more than I’ve had previously.
I have all my client files on this, plus a backup archive, and about 20 hours of music. This should be enough for most people.
I find the speed of this is pretty quick. I tend to work up to 12 windows at a time, and it switches between windows without delay. It also loads up files in double quick time.
***Would I recommend this product?***
I would recommend this notebook for use to any professional or home user. I could quite easily use this as a replacement for my PC. It does everything I could possibly need tit to do, and more.
The battery life is plenty to allow you to watch a movie on the train (As long as you look after the battery of course). At 2.9kg, it is lightweight enough to be carried around, but if you need to take the Adapter with you, bear the weight of that in mind. On my “uncalibrated” kitchen scales, I reckon you can add on another 0.6kg for the AC Adaptor.
I also use this at home instead of the PC as it means I can sit in the lounge with my husband while he watches television, and I can do my work. That’s an option you don’t get with a PC.
***The Cost***
Well, bearing in mind that mine came courtesy of the insurance company, I have done some research on this. These retail at between £850 and £1100, depending on why you choose to buy it from. I suggest you shop around.

Advantages: High quality, Trusted brand, Good specification Disadvantages: There are cheaper alternatives, though not necessarily as good!
...across a version of the Samsung V25 in Staples that I very nearly bought, however, after closer inspection I noticed that the V25 in Comet had a bigger hard-drive but was the same price, therefore I made my purchase from Comet at £999.99.
This isn't going to be one of those over the top tech-y reviews that only the advanced computer nerd will understand so don't worry!
LOOKS
Ok, we've all heard the saying about not judging a book by its cover, ... ...the outer casing is the Samsung logo in a shiny chrome style lettering. When opened up, the silver theme continues for the power button, hot keys and mouse pad, but the keyboard is black.
FEEL
As with most laptop type computers, the keys are very flat, which may get a bit of getting used to if you normally use a standard keyboard with your desktop PC. The mouse pad is very reliable and easy to use - it allows the user to tap the pad for the equivalent ...

...and great looking and the Samsung V25 is the only one i could find!
I purchased this laptop from Comet just a few days for a penny short of £1,000 and at the time i was very unsure whether it could really do what i want or not.
When i got the laptop home i first discovered i had far more software than the store had advertised and the day before i went down to buy it i was under the impression that it only had a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive but some advertisement ... ...DVD-RW drive (combo) so i was very impressed.
The speed of the laptop is excellent, its an Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz and to me its just as fast as a Intel P4 3.06 Ghz PC with HT that i have recently helped to built.
Its come complete with 512 Mb of RAM and before i made the purchase i knew there was space for an additional 512 Mb and i thought i was going to have to add this but i am so impressed with it i havent bothered to yet.

...the past four weeks the Samsung product has restored my feelings of pride in new ownership.
The first thing to notice about this machine is its slick design and excellent build-quality. Its casing is nicely put together, and doesn’t flex or warp. The keyboard has a nice positive feel to it, doesn’t bounce about like those on “cheapo” laptops – and doesn’t leave you feeling crippled after several hours typing. The touch-pad is easy to use and enables ... ...combo CD/DVD-RW is reassuringly robust. Samsung are justifiably proud of their 15” TFT screen, which is crisp, clear, and very easy on the eyes. The only small gripe I have is that the flap over the external mic / phono-S/PDIF / serial / S-Video ports is a bit flimsy and I can see it getting damaged some day. In operation, the Samsung is eerily quiet and very fast – quite enough performance to make this laptop future-proofed for quite some time. ...

A great high-end of the mid-range laptops. The machine is bult well and doesnt feel flimsy like some of the similar priced unbranded laptops. A good fast chip (P4 2.8) and balance of fast 512 Mb of RAM make it suitable for virtually all applications, the screen and video system surprised me in qulaity and it will happpily deal with most games.
