Advantages: excellent playback, radio reception is amazing, too many to mention - price etc Disadvantages: not compatible with iTunes
...and missed out on the Samsung YP-U3 4GB which at £65 comes in as the best mp3 player I have owned or had the pleasure to use.
Available in 3 sizes, the Samsung YP-U3 is priced at £35, £50 and £65 for the 1, 2 and 4GB models respectively and while the smaller memory models are available in a range of bright and funky colours, the 4GB model which I opted for is like a Model T Ford, available in any colour as long as it is black.

Like other mp3 players songs are downloaded from various online stores such as Napster and CDs can be burnt onto the memory. One very minor niggle is that iTunes isn't compatible with the YP-U3. Downloads take place after the player has been plugged into the USB port.
The screen is very much like the iPod and shows the name of the artist and track being played, the playtime of the song left and battery strength but as a nice touch there is also a menu option to see how much memory is left, estimated amount of time the battery will last for and a series of radio preset stations which can be altered and when playing the radio you can select to record songs direct to the memory so most of the time the need to download new tracks is obsolete as I take them direct from the radio.
The screen is bright and because of the black background and pale lettering is very easy to see despite it being tiny.
My first mp3 player cost £179 and had a 2GB memory and was the size of my palm. It also broke beyond repair after only 18 months of fairly light use so I am delighted to have come across the Samsung YP-U3 as the memory capacity of 1200 songs will never be totally filled, the radio reception and playback quality is fantastic and best of all, it is simple to use.

Manufacturer's product description
The player is compatible with MP3, WMA and Ogg file types and the battery life is a claimed 15 hours. The display is a 1'' OLED that from the looks of it crams lots of data onto the tiny screen. The new YP-U3 keeps the odd blue light around the USB connector that the previous generations of the player had.
