Having had a USB drive for about 6 years and them constantly breaking or literally falling apart i though it was time to switch to a different make from the range of Bytestor drives i have used. My first drive cost me £25 for a megre 128MB but with the cheap range now available, i was able to pick up this 1GB drive for under £15.

As for the design there is no removable lid (which i normally manage to break) but instead the USB connector is stored within the 'pen' and slides out by the sliding of the white opener (centre of picture). This makes the whole drive feel much more solid and there is less chance of it breaking. The only problem with it though is that it collects dust easier but thats not a really big problem.

As with all new drives they are USB 2.0 which means that transfer is quick and effiecient. That is it about everything for the technical detail but the thing that separates it with all my past drives and others i have seen is the U3 launchpad. This is a piece of software that is installed on the drive and when you connect it to your USB drive it loads up and allows you to certain tasks;

- Explore USB drive - basically directs you to the folder showing all sub-folders and files. This is usefull as you do not need to explore your computer for the drive.

- Manage USB programs - Allows you to manage the programmes which have been installed on your device with the U3 such as Skype, antivirus and password protection (U3 smart programs).

- Status and settings - Allows you to see how much free space you have and change security, language and settings.

- Add programs - Install or download new programs to your drive. I dont use this but some people may find it useful.

- Help and support - As with any device or program there is a help button, but i don't see why you would need it as there is not much too working it and there is little that could possibly go wrong.

- About U3 drive - Just basic info. such as version type and legal writings.

Finally there is an eject button which allows you to remove the device as long as all associated programs are closed. This is a vital thing to do as otherwise some data could get corrupted, not a happy scenario (from experience).

The final cool little feature is that when it is connected to the computer and is working a large red LED lights up in the white area telling you if it is connected or not.

Altogether it gives you everything you would want but the only change i would make would be to get one with a larger capacity as i could then use it to back up large folders of documents instead of just using it to transfer single files.
