After many months of happy use, I mislaid my iPod Nano and in it's place my girlfriend bought me a Black Sansa Clip 2GB. Here are my thoughts on it so far.
Sound Quality As with many mp3 players, the quality of the headphones has a huge influence on the quality of the sound. I judge my headphones by two criteria; firstly how rich is the sound and secondly how much sound leaks and annoys my fellow train travellers. The 'phones packaged with the Clip are clear but lacking in bass before they begin to distort and they leak sound to the point where a lot of people frown at me on the train. Instead I use the fantastic Sennheiser CX 300 headphones which I can not recommend highly enough. Using these, the sound of the Sansa Clip is easily comparable with the iPod. You can use the graphic equaliser or presets to tailor the sound to your liking.
Ease of use There is an on/off switch on the left hand side of the Clip and the volume is on the right. Navigating around the various menus and songs is done using the round switch on the front. It is very easy to use and navigate. It is also very simple to transfer music onto the player as it can all be done through Windows Media Player.
Look and design My Clip gets most use in the gym or running and is ideal for both. It is very small and light and clips onto clothing. The screen provides basic song/album/artist details and the blue lettering looks cool. It is worthy of note that I have not taken the best care of my Clip which has been dropped, splashed and trodden on by mistake. Not only does it still work perfectly, it shows no signs of damage. Not as cool as the iPod range but still an attractive item.
Range of features Nlot only does the Clip play music, it also works as a voice recorder and fm radio. The radio is very hissy and does not compare to other portable radios I own. The voice recorder works fine but I personally never use it.
Value for money The price of this product varies but for around £30 you get a good quality mp3 player that will be the perfect gym companion.
Conclusion I personally feel that Apple make the best mp3 players with their iPod range. I also feel that there is a void between their shuffle model and their cheapest Nano. This is where items such as the Clip come in. You can easily navigate around your albums and whilst running you can easily use the controls without looking at them. This should appeal to people who don't want the permanent element of surprise that the Shuffle offers. Battery life is pretty good and I usually have to charge it once a week having subjected it to daily use on the train and gym for a few hours a day.
It is well worth upgrading the headphones but by no means essential.
Overall, this product is very good for gym use and the interface with Windows Media Player is extremely easy to use. Recommended.
