Advantages great sound quality, plenty of functions, simple, easy to use, nice display colour!
Disadvantages occasional 'crashes', mine won't transfer files any more :-(
About three or possibly even four years ago I bought a Sandisk Sansa M240 1 GB mp3 player from Amazon, it was quite a bargain price, seemed pretty simple and straightforward, which was ideal for me as I had never had one before, and didn't require many bells and whistles, and it came with all the headphones, cables, and driver disks you need to begin use. Mine also came with a clear silicon case to protect it.
It is light, it is small, and it works well. For a budget mp3 player I found this terrific, and the sound quality is actually pretty good too. I hooked it up to my pc with the supplied cable, and copied over a my Learn German series so I could listen to them anywhere, learning the language subliminally perhaps, and this has also worked very well.It actually will store up to 16 hours of mp3 tracks, or double if they're in wma format. I like to make up playlists in Windows Media Player on my PC, then transfer them across, couldn't be simpler, just drag and drop!
It takes one AAA battery (the small one), I tend to use a rechargeable as ordinary batteries won't last very long, especially the amount I use it!It has a built-in microphone, I tested this out when I first got the player, and it worked well, though I have had no use for this facility since.
Battery life may be extended by adjusting the backlight time, i.e. the longer it remains on the more battery power being used up, this can be very easily adjusted in the settings menu though, in fact all of the settings are easy to use, and you get some nice options to choose from. The screen is lit in blue, nice, and the display tells you the song title, artist, and album, as well as battery level.
You can sort the tracks into playlists, and even then you can opt to play only those in a certain category, genre or style. You can also choose to play a whole album, or all songs by a certain artist etc too, which is a nice function. There is also the ability to play a song on a loop, or to A-B selector so you can flit between two points in a track. Now for the downsides, occasionally it 'crashes' while I'm scrolling through the tracks, so none of the buttons will respond, just frozen. This is not a major problem as I just pop out the battery and replace it and things are fine again, a bit irritating though, and I don't know why it happens.
More of a sad thing I have recently found is that I cannot get the connection to work between the player and the PC. Ordinarily I would plug the cable in and the player would automatically be found by the PC, however there seems to be a lack of communication.I'm still going to give it five stars, as I think it's a great bit of budget but great quality kit.
