For me, one of the great things about travelling is having the chance to sample the many different beers that are sometimes hard to find back home. SAN MIGUEL however, doesn't really fall into this category as it's widely available in supermarkets in the UK for around a quid a bottle. In fact Spain is not really the best country in the world to visit if your sole purpose is gorge on top quality, innovative brews...but the weather is a whole lot better than in Belgium, that's for double-damn sure.
Yes sirree, it can get really hot under that Mediterranean sun and what could be better on a scorching day than a small cold one? Apart from a large, ice-cold half-a-dozen, that is.
So when I was recently in Spain I really had no option but to partake of that most famous Spanish/Philippinno beer...SAN MIGUEL.

A guy walks into a bar and notices a man who is 12 inches tall playing the piano. He asks the barman for a drink and the barman says, "Before you get your drink you have to rub the magic beer bottle and make a wish."
He rubs the bottle and, kazaam! out pops a genie, who says, "I will grant you one wish."
The man thinks about it and then wishes for a million bucks. A cloud of smoke fills the room and when the smoke clears there are a million ducks waddling around in the bar.
He tells the barman, "Hey, I didn't ask for a million ducks."
The barman replies, "You think I wanted a 12-inch pianist?"
San Miguel pours clear and sparkling, to a pale yellow colour with masses of rising bubbles forming a big, white foamy head which soon collapses to a more modest whispy lace. It has a fairly subtle aroma with some corn, and a very faint, slightly citrus, hop note in the background.
• The Taste •
Initially, this light bodied brew has a somewhat crisp, fairly sharp hop bite with definite citrus tones. It's highly, if not overly, carbonated, giving it an aggressive and lively mouthfeel. There's not a lot of malt flavour evident, but what there is comes across sweet and even. There are some grain husk flavours and a slight metallic edge before it finishes quite dry with a gentle, spicy aftertaste.
• The Verdict •
At 5% ABV, this beer is fine when you are sweltering under the hot Spanish sun and are in dire need of a fizzy, beer-like refreshment. Served ice-cold, it certainly hits the spot, but I wouldn't go looking for any deep and complex brewing sensations here. It's an average macro-brew and although there's very little about it to criticize, there's also not a lot to praise either. As for food pairings, it'll go very nicely with patatas bravas or some other spicy tapas, but I think I'll stick to a bottle of Rioja to compliment a paella.
For my money, it's far too carbonated and unless I was hot and thirsty, it's not really a beer I would hunt down.
Would I drink it again? - Probably, but I think I'd go to Spain to do it. Thanks for reading, Sláinte
Advantages: Great taste, Good price, Great mate!!! Disadvantages: Might blow his top!
...Gentleman, my best mate, Mr. San Miguel! Now San is a man of many guises. I remember the time we were at that Bar-B-Q and San was acting the goat, dressing up in a 250ml bottle and piling on the strength until he was up to 5.4%. He it's his Spanish origin, and that whenever he's 'exported' abroad he seems to get stronger! Personally I thought he was talking a load of rubbish, but there's no stopping old San when he gets going. He really was on good ... ...it was just me but San seemed a bit taller when he'd got all dressed up in his party outfit of a 330ml bottle. Again, he packed a bit of a punch that night, but he was on top form that night, and very popular indeed. Everywhere I looked people seemed to have a piece of him, but they all seemed to be enjoying his company. But there's more to San than just a party animal. We had a great holiday once in Barcelona. San seemed to really fit in here, well ...

...the cool refreshing taste of San Miguel.
Most of you that have been on a Mediterranean Holiday will probably recognise the San Miguel Beer. It is a firm favourite in the resorts of Spain and the islands.
It was more trendy in the early 90's with the "package holiday" brigade. Now, it is making a comeback.

Trendy Wine bars tend to sell it as opposed to local Pubs. It is more of a young persons drink and more likely to be found here.

...the most well known is San Miguel.
The Spanish beer industry dates back over a 100 years and San Miguel was first produced in 1957.
The origins of San Miguel go all the way to the Philippines where Spanish monks started making beer by using traditional methods. The monks lived in Manila and in a district called “San Miguel”. This is how the name came about.

San Miguel accounts for around 80% of the total export of Spanish lager beer and is available quite freely throughout the U.K., be it in selected pubs, shops or on the Internet.
As stated in one of my earlier opinions I travel quite frequently and one of my favourite destinations is Las Palmas, Canary Islands.
Wherever I travel I try as much to sample the local brews and if I find it satisfactory will usually stick ...

The origins of San Miguel go back to 1890 in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, and the brewery was founded by a Spaniard.
Although San Miguel have a brewery in Spain it is regarded by many people in Asia as a famous beer from the Philippines. Reviews which might be of interest for "San Miguel Premium Lager"
Advantages: Taste, Goes down easily, Cheap (6 for £5) Disadvantages: Not the best (though freaking great)
Just previous to this review I'd had a bottle of SanMiguel ("San Awful"- http://www.ciao.co.uk/SanMiguelPremiumLagerReview5632358), then sat down to a bottle of Miller. Thankfully I'd still had a Miller left in the fridge after the previous nights drinking.
Miller is one of the few beers that comes in a clear glass bottle (as the beers can be given a malty taste if left in sun light, as can also be seen in Corona extra), Miller is an American 4.7% import from apparently America's second top company. Which they claim as being "America's quality beer", personally I'd agree.
Now onto the actual review...well actually it wasn't, the review was started like 2 weeks ago but I never actualy got round to finishing it as my flat mate drank the one I saved so here's the review as I've got one with me.

Advantages: Price, availablity, taste, quality Disadvantages: Boring people to death talking about its merits
Of all the lagers available in the pubs of the UK, Staropramen is three things which the others are not - inexpensive, tasty and widely available. Lagers such as Stella Artois, available in almost every pub, are pricey and frankly not-that-great. Becks, Carlsberg, Carling and Heineken, the cheap alternatives, are weak and completely untasty. There are a few other lagers which are either local brews or specialist lagers, which can be tasty and cheap but are often only available near where they are made or in true fanatics' establishments.
Staropramen, on the other hand, combines all these qualities. Usually cheaper than Stella Artois, it is great tasting (refreshing, full-bodied and punchy) and is sold on-tap at most pubs. Of course, in some pubs they opt to sell SanMiguel as the "alternative" premiumlager, but where available, I ...
Advantages: Smooth taste Disadvantages: a little on the expensive side
Being a big beer drinker (a big drinker in general) and working in the drinks industry , I have tried hundreds of lagers , and without a doubt , this is one of the best. On the taste side , it has a smooth , yet hoppy taste , reminicent of heineken or possibly sanmiguel. It has a reasonably low ABV (4,1%). Rather light , crisp texture with a great after taste. It is considered to be a premiumlager , although its usually a bit cheaper than most of its premium brothers , yet a bit more expensive than your average lager. Its kind of a middle man between the two , but in my opinion , would fit in fine with other premiumlagers such as Heineken , Grolsch or Carlsberg premium. On initial tasting it is comparable to Heieken , or more so towards Windhoek (Namibian Lager) , smooth , though not as smooth as Fosters or Red Stripe , it has more ...
