Just before Christmas last year my Fiancé and I bought ourselves a brand spanking new camera, we bought the new Canon EOS 400D, the reviews for it were all great and it was fully capable of doing what we wanted it for so we splashed out the money and bought it from an online retailer. A few days later the camera arrived and seeing as I hadn’t read the small print I hadn’t realised that it didn’t come with a memory card, in fact there were quite a few bits and pieces missing which I had assumed would come, ‘in the box’ but I’ll leave that for another review!
I started to look around the internet to see what memory cards were available and I have to admit that the choice is just mind blowing, different brands, brand names then generic brands, different sizes – small ranging from 512MB and large going right up to 4 or even 8 GB. The larger the space on the card the more money it was going to cost which is typical with pretty much everything in this world. You can have an Ultra card, and extreme card, a multi-use a special edition and even a plus card – the choice for just one brand was mind blowing enough without exploring any further.
As I was only a beginner I only wanted a small memory card and was only looking for 1 or 2 GB. Finally I came across the SanDisk ultra II 1.0GB and was really quite impressed with what I was reading.
“When the shooting turns fast and furious, serious photographers turn to SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash. So fast, you’re always ready for the next shot. So rugged, environmental conditions are never a problem. So well built that it’s backed by SanDisk’s lifetime limited warranty. When every shot counts, choose SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash.”
After reading that statement on the SanDisk website I was sold, I knew that was the brand that I was going to be buying; all I needed to do now was choose the size of memory card that I was going to get. The choice as I already said was between either a 1GB or 2GB card. The detailed info for the 2 cards was identical, they both had the same sequential read speed of a minimum of 10BM per second allowing for ultra fast image viewing and data transfer. The minimum sequential write speed of 9MB per second was ample to allow you to capture large image files faster. Add to that the low power consumption allowing for a longer battery life and a lifetime warranty I was 100% sold and finally settled on a 1.0GB card to begin with and plans for a larger card in the future if need-be.
The 1GB card I bought cost me £12 at the time but I have since seen it available for at little as £8.00 and up to £16.00 so it obviously depends on how hard you look as to how much you are going to pay. I am still really happy with the card that we bought, for typical use in our camera it will hold upwards of 200 pictures, admittedly the more pictures that are stored on the card it’s response time does slow down a little causing a delay before you can take your next picture but that doesn’t start for me until I’ve taken over 100 pictures; the obvious cure if you are going to want to take that many pictures in one session would be to buy a larger card.
I would recommend this card for any beginners out there. The card installation is easy; it simply pushes into the slot on the side of my camera and is immediately ready for use. The dimensions are pretty standard for the style of card, 4.2cm wide, by 3.5cm high and 0.4cm deep – colour black with a grey, black and red label reading SanDisk Ultra® II CompactFlash® 1GB. I will admit that I don’t know what it is fully capable of but as far as I am concerned it is everything that I need - for the time being at least
