This week I'm mostly being brunette although that is subject to change. Now i've turned 31 and I've got my degree I'm trying in vain to look a bit more sophisticated and intelligent...(not that i'm saying blondes are not, of course!)

For Christmas last year, my mother in law in a somewhat misguided move bought me a vacuum cleaner! Far be it from me to get paranoid about these things but when every other member of the family received fun, frivolous or pretty things, I can only assume this was a none too subtle dig at my skills as a housewife.
I had been looking at vacuum cleaners because mine was about a million years old and weighed more than I did. I was considering a Dyson – I’d had one before which had met it’s fate when I fell down the stairs with it. But I wouldn’t have put it high on my Christmas list (or on my Christmas list at all if I’m honest!) I must not have been a very good girl last year because Santa didn’t bring me a Dyson; in fact I must have been a very bad girl, because he brought me a Sanyo 1500 Bagless.
After
my initial disappointment at having received a vacuumcleaner for Christmas I had a good look at it and it didn’t seem too bad. It looked neat and compact and it didn’t need bags, which was good.
The instruction leaflet was terrible, in that way that badly translated instructions always are - quite amusing but not very helpful. I don’t really like cylinder cleaners but this one was light (it only weighs 5.5 kgs) and not too bulky. Sanyo is also a well-known name synonymous with quality. (A quick check in the Argos catalogue revealed that this unit costs £69.99 which is one of the highest priced cylinder bagless vacuums – I know it was cheeky of me checking the price of a gift but it was in the name of research!)
On first use I was pleasantly surprised. The suction was excellent and it was also variable for vacuuming wooden floors, rugs lino etc. It was easy to vary it with the flick of a switch. The shape of it made it easy to clean stairs and difficult to get at areas. It came with two accessories, (which to this day I haven’t used) a narrow nozzle for edges and gaps and a rotating round brush for fragile or easily scratched items. It has a cord rewind facility for neat storage of the cable and plug and a dust indicator to help you keep track on when it is ready for emptying. The hose swivels 360 degrees but it is quite flimsy. It has a good length of hose but keeping it upright was difficult.
I didn’t like how noisy it was but it was doing the job so that was just a minor complaint. Overall,I was very impressed until it came time to empty it. Because it has a 6-litre dust capacity it was quite a while before it needed emptying.
Taking it apart to empty was a nightmare! I followed the book step by step but it still took about half an hour. Removing the filter was easy enough but it was really hard to clean out and there was dust everywhere. It was definitely a two man job to get the unit apart.(Except of course there were no men about to do the job because in my house they are allergic to hoovering apparently!) After the ease of unclipping I remembered from my Dyson this came as something as a shock.
Since I first cleaned it out, it has never worked properly again. The suction has been lost and although you can get it to suck up it takes a lot of elbow grease and if you spill anything you have to sweep it up with a dustpan and brush before you vacuum – not the most labour saving of devices! The unit overheats within minutes of being turned on and the dust indicator is permanently registering that it is full. It makes more noise than even and sometimes it randomly kicks out a cloud of dust!
I had it checked over by a vacuum cleaner specialist who told me that this model is renowned for faults and is generally rubbish! I phoned the Sanyo help line (my troubles with the Sanyo help line are a different story altogether and one which leaves me inclined to rant rather a lot, suffice to say I’m about as impressed with them as I am with their product!) Their engineer checked it over and gave it a clean bill of health!
I note that Argos no longer stock this model although Index still do and I can’t help wondering if there is a real problem with it. (As opposed to my lack of skills in domestic goddess department.) As it originally came from Argos and I had no joy with Sanyo I contacted Argos customer services. They advised me that there had been other complaints about this model, but they were not specific about the nature of these complaints.
It appears to be a really poor quality vacuum cleaner with a very high price tag.
If I had a phobia of housework before, its been increased tenfold by my experiences with the Sanyo 1500 Bagless Cylinder Cleaner.
Definitely not recommended!

Hi, I also own a sanyo (pulse upright) and at the weekend it went 'BANG' for the second time. The first time sanyo repaired it, but this time it is a few weeks out of guarentee.......... would never buy one again!!

Hehehe, maybe you could return the vacuum cleaner as a
Christmas present to your favourite enemy or mother in law?
