I recently had to buy a replacement television set and decided to upgrade from a traditional television ‘square box’ picture format to a widescreen model. Price was an important factor since my budget couldn’t stretch to a plasma or LCD screen.
For £279 I managed to settle on a Nicam stereo 28” Widescreen television by Sanyo. This seemed to be a sensible compromise, trading off value and quality. I don’t really watch too much television to justify spending anything above a few hundred pounds. Rather than buy from a high street retailer, I searched the Internet and found a leading discount UK supplier: www.empiredirect.co.uk
Over recent years the electronics market has become even more competitive than ever before, so it’s amazing how much little money will buy such a good deal. The
Sanyo TV set replaced a Philips Nicam stereo model which cost £379 six or seven years ago. A comparative Philips model now costs just £154 – quite an incredible reduction all things considered.
The television was delivered within three days of ordering from Empire Direct. Unpacking and setup took about 20 minutes and much of that time was spent manhandling the television and placing in the right viewing position.
Weighing in at 32.5 kg, ideally two people are needed to put the TV in place.
Dimensions are 779mm Wide, 524mm High, and 511.5mm Deep.
Once out of the box, you simply plug in to the electric socket and connect the aerials. Modern TV’s have Scart connectors for your video, DVD, Sky boxes and this model has two Scart connectors at the rear. (If you can connect with Scart sockets rather than traditional RGB connectors this is always better because of modern standards guaranteeing better signal transfer between units with less loss of quality.)
A remote control unit was supplied with batteries. Initially I thought this seemed cluttered, but on balance all the buttons are sensibly positioned. The buttons are a little fiddly if you’ve big fingers but that’s a common problem most electronic manufacturers have overlooked these days.
This TV has ‘plug and play’ capability. This means the first time you switch on the television it automatically tunes and stores the channels received through your aerial without any user intervention. After the automatic search has taken place, you can easily store the channels selected according to your choice, i.e. BBC 1 – channel 1, BBC 2 – channel 2, ITV – channel 3, etc., etc. Simply switch to the onscreen menu via the remote control unit. A quick reference to the Instruction Manual explains the procedure concisely.
Of course, once you’ve done all initial switch on and set up, the two most important factors are picture and sound quality. Picture quality is superb and much better in widescreen once you’ve got used to the change from the traditional square box format. The Sanyo scores well and I couldn’t really see any problems: picture quality at 50 mhz was crystal clear – though it also helps if you’ve re-checked your outside aerial for best signal reception and avoid disappointment.
Via the on-screen menu you can, of course, change colour, brightness, contrast and sharpness if you need to. There’s also a button which has four pre-selected choices depending on viewing conditions, i.e. daylight, night-time, dimly or brightly lit room. One press of the button automatically alters the picture mode selection.
Nicam broadcast sound quality is reasonable and Sanyo has tried to mimic cinema quality with a 3D (three dimensional) effect and bass expander. Again you can alter volume directly from the remote control and sound preferences bass, treble, balance from the on-screen menu. It’s very easy to do. Sound output is rated at 2 x 5 watts from speakers located either side and below the screen. (By fitting a dedicated surround sound system or plugging in a hi-fi unit sound quality can be improved).
Teletext broadcasts are available and this is to normal standard and selectable via your remote control.
There’s also a timer function for switching the TV off after a predetermined period via the on-screen menu.
If you’ve never seen widescreen before it is highly recommended and the Sanyo automatically detects the right picture format being transmitted by the broadcaster. You’ve also complete control over that too as you can manually override this by selecting different size ratios: 4:3, 14:9, 16:9 and video formats.
Overall I am impressed would recommend the Sanyo, especially if you can buy at a discounted price.
Happy viewing!
