Looking for a compact digital camera which delivers great pictures and you can carry around in your pocket ? Well, I was ! I tried out some Casios,Panasonics and looked at buying Sonys and Canons... but in the end took what I thought was a risk ... and purchased a Sanyo Xacti E6. Sanyo have a small range of cameras and camcorders but are known primarily as cam manufacturers for other popular makes. So the E6 came as a revelation.
This is a solid looking camera with an uncluttered handsome design which quickly gets admiring glances from friends and family. The 3 x optical zoom lens is in the Konica Minolta non-protruding style which has a particularly good reputation for macro shots... and the E6 doesn't dissapoint with close-up shots. Well designed ergonomics and pleasing to the eye, the camera delivers good results. Image quality is sharp and colours are realistically produced. I have got some fine results during action shots which is quite an achievement for a small cam. But then the E6 is quite a little mover ! It is ready to take pics in an instant with the autofocus and there is an option to use an ultra fast touch sensitive shutter button to take very quick shots indeed. The camera is easy to use and there are loads of helpful tips and menus to make navigating the menu straight forward.
The 3 inch display is simply marvellous and is useful in both playback and record mode in most lighting situations. A pretty good movie mode with sound but without image stabilization adds to the cameras usefulness. The movie mode does consume a lot of memory though.
The overall performance of the E6 is really very good and it copes Ok with poor lighting conditions. Be aware the flash is not particularly powerful and red eye can be noticed in a few shots.
It is pleasing to note that the camera uses SD cards which are cheaper and does not use a cradle when charging the battery. The proprietary battery performs well considering how small it is !
You can change some of the white balance and exposure values and reduce the megapixel count if you are running out of space on the SD card. I think there is little discernible difference between the 6m and the 4m option. One of my favourite options in playback mode is the random setting in slideshow -very cool when showing off to your friends.
Overall, its quick, its quality and heck it looks gorgeous !
Update: There is red eye reduction included in the E6 but with all small cams this does not eliminate red eye completely. Photos of this product on the web do not do this cam justice. It has a minimalist look to it which is pleasing to the eye. I purchased this for £115 in October 2006 and I have compared it with more expensive models from other more popular brands. Sanyo have new range of cams available from Autumn 2006. Look out for bargains !
After I read the review I have the mind to buy one to replace my previous one.
This review is so detailed and impressive.
Thank you for sharing it with me.
I've bought one of these for my FIL for xmas, cause he wanted a small simple camera, with a lithium ion rechargeable battery, good sized screen and optical zoom, and this camera offers all of that for £108 from Amazon/Pixmania. And it's not bad looking at all.
Glad to hear you give a positive write-up!
