Enchanter (Axis Trilogy) - Sara Douglass Enchanter (Axis Trilogy) - Sara Douglass
There is always a worrying extent to which first fantasy novels, and especially first ... more
fantasy trilogies, are liable to consist of the
same old ideas more  or less meaningfully
arranged. Sarah Douglass, in her first novel
Battleaxe and  this sequel, has not  entirely
escaped these charges, yet manages largely to
evade them by  a colourful pictorial  imagination
and moral underpinning that makes much of what she
deals with new and  fresh. Caught up in
prophesies, Axis struggles politically with his
human half-brother,  King Borneheld, and magically
with his other half-brother, the  ambitious
chimera  Gorgrael, whose legions of monsters
squirm South through the snow.  He has not only to
do the right thing, but do it in the right way,
or, says prophecy, all will  crumble in his
grasp. Torn between his love for two magically
gifted women, and  between the urge to  do what is
right and the need to comply with destiny, Axis is
an  interesting flawed hero,  whose dilemmas
matter both as those of a convincing character and
as  those implicit in  the sort of book this is.
Douglass shows real promise, and even these  first
books deliver  the goods. --Roz Kaveney

Review of Battleaxe - The Axis Trilogy - Book One - Sara Douglass by fireflash69

Advantages: Great pace and enthralling characters
Disadvantages: Far too short.

...that things are not quite the way that he has been brought up to believe. Thus begins his exploration of his own and Tencendor's heritage. Sara Douglass has a wonderful way with the English language and such a smooth style that the books are quite literally page turners. Just when you think you know where she is going with a plot lline she twists it into something else. Descriptions of bllodshed and carnage are always vivid and often make you squirm and there are moments when you actually get a lump in your thoat at the sorrow and loss the characters must endure. I really cannot recommend this series highly enough. If you've never read it you're missing a real treat.... Read review

...It is a lovely book about a little girl who is kind and loves. Sara's dad is presumed dead in the war and Sara has to become a cleaner in the school with the other girl and Sara makes up stories for tje other girls in her room in the attic. This is a lovely book to read and i would read it again and recommend it to others to read the book. Sometimes dreams come true...
Review of A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett by kamallan

Advantages: A beautifully written tale with girlish dreams...
Disadvantages: archaeic language

...that may need to be embroidered on is the occasional use of archaic language and ideas about servant girls and the Victorian class system. I know I certainly needed help with these concepts at the grand age of six! The story begins by introducing us to the lovely Sara. She travels to England with her Papa and is enrolled at Miss Minchin's select semnary for young girls. Sara has thought of this as, 'the place,' for many years after watching children leave from her native India. Our poor Sara has had a life blessed, with mixed fortunes and all that she desires being delivered to her as her English father, Captain Crewe loves her dearly and lost his wife when Sara was born. Therefore it seems that he has cushioned her life as best as he can to make his, 'little missus,' comfortable and happy despite the lack of a mother. This novel is set... Read review
