Scanning for Dummies
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212p by
Bryn_Pearson
Advantages: so easy to use
Disadvantages: my first one was broken on arrival
...would give good results. The AGFA scanner was recommended to me - it isn't too expensive (about thrity pounds, depending on whom you buy it from) it is easy to use, and it plugs in in such a way that you can run your printer at the same time.
Now, I've not had a scanner before, so I knew nothing about the possibility of having to unplug and plug it in, and do the same with the printer - I gather this is not unusual. For a person of little technical ... ...it, will certainly go abck to AGFA (although through some other middle man!) I woudl recomend this product for anyoen new to this sort of thing, and for anyone who doesn't want to do anything outrageously complucated. This scanner can handle any obvious scanning needs, and produces good quality images. ...

Another boring low-cost scanner ...
Review of Trust Compact Scan USB 19200 by
Tickled_Pink
Advantages: Cheap, reasonable image quality
Disadvantages: It's just another scanner, a few problems with XP drivers
The Trust CompactScan 19200 is a typical low-cost, no frills scanner, so there's not really that much that you can say about it.
The model has undergone several revisions, with mine being some 6 months old and model no: 11924 - one down from the current revision. As the name suggests, this scanner only connects to the USB port so it's no use for legacy systems without a USB port (unless you use something like the Belkin USB to Parallel module, or ... ...annoying aspects of PC ownership is the number of power cables and power supplies you end up with after adding a few peripherals. Thankfully, like many other USB scanners, the CompactScan doesn't need an external power supply and takes its power directly from the USB port.
The scanning speed is about what you'd expect from a cheap scanner, as it the colour definition and available resolution. The software that comes with the scanner helps to make ...

Microtek ScanMaker 3600
Review of Microtek ScanMaker 3600 by
sbutler1
Advantages: Affordable, solid, good quality and you can rest cups of tea on top!
Disadvantages: Sometimes slow to scan and other scanners do have better quality
We have had out Microtek Scanmaker 3600 for well over 5 years now and it is still going strong and doing the job for our entire family. I'm not sure how much we paid for it, but it was not a lot because we just wanted a basic scanner that could scan in documents. It is very reliable, easy to use, with a suitable range of features but has the tendency to be a bit slow occasionally.
1. Looks, Design and Size
The scanner is fairly good looking, quite ... ...scanner is very straightforward. The Microtek Scan wizard programme is very user friendly and straightforward and I have never had any problems getting it to do what I have wanted. 9/10
3. Speed, Colour Sensitivity and Resolution
The scanner is normally very fast, but can be exceptionally slow when trying to scan at higher qualities or when editing and changing images. Nevertheless, a few minutes patience and it is done. Unless you can't wait around, ...

Snapscan Touch - do not touch too much
Review of Agfa SnapScan Touch by
Macminer
Advantages: Good colour recognition, easy for beginners
Disadvantages: Speed and build quality
...and for various purposes.
Agfa Snapscan Touch seemed a good choice, having good reviews in computer magazines and being available immediately (I would have had to wait then for other Agfa models). So we bought it and in a while put it to (good?) use. I must say I had a feeling something was wrong right from the start. In a while, my feeling grew to the extent that everything seemed to be wrong. I guess my previous experience with HP and Epson scanners ... ...fast. I've read somewhere the AGFA scanning software sends the whole firmware to the scanner each time it is started, which seems very likely.
2. Scanning itself is slooow. Not as slow as with some Plustek scanners, but still slow enough to make it unsuitable for OCR use, if you plan to OCR anything more than a few pages long. What's most surprising, an A4 scan takes about 50 seconds at anything above 100dpi (and ages at >300dpi), no matter if you ...

quality scanners at affordable prices
Review of Agfa SnapScan 600 by
kamfisa
Advantages: cheap, easy to install, fast, reliable
Disadvantages: bulky
I bought my scanner a couple of months ago, and I don't know why I didn't buy one sooner.
I use it sooo much. I use it mostly to scan pictures of my family to use for e-greetings. The scanner comes with its own installation software, and its very simple to use. You just put in the Cd, and follow the insructions on screen.
Then comes the fun in using it. I found it to scan relatively quickly and was fairly quiet. The scaned pictures can be done ... ...your choice, ie folders, emailed, optimized for web pages and sent to your printer to print image etc. The dimensions of the scanned image can be altered up to 800% or much smaller than 100% and you can choose to save only a portion of the image to your destination (so if you want to cut out most of the background you can do before you send it to your file). Many types of images can be scanned, from glossy photos, mat finish photos, magazine prints, ...
