Scanning for Dummies
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212p by Bryn_Pearson

Advantages: so easy to use
Disadvantages: my first one was broken on arrival

...would give good results. The AGFA scanner was recommended to me - it isn't too expensive (about thrity pounds, depending on whom you buy it from) it is easy to use, and it plugs in in such a way that you can run your printer at the same time. Now, I've not had a scanner before, so I knew nothing about the possibility of having to unplug and plug it in, and do the same with the printer - I gather this is not unusual. For a person of little technical ...
...it, will certainly go abck to AGFA (although through some other middle man!) I woudl recomend this product for anyoen new to this sort of thing, and for anyone who doesn't want to do anything outrageously complucated. This scanner can handle any obvious scanning needs, and produces good quality images. ... Read review

Snapscan Touch - do not touch too much
Review of Agfa SnapScan Touch by Macminer

Advantages: Good colour recognition, easy for beginners
Disadvantages: Speed and build quality

...and for various purposes. Agfa Snapscan Touch seemed a good choice, having good reviews in computer magazines and being available immediately (I would have had to wait then for other Agfa models). So we bought it and in a while put it to (good?) use. I must say I had a feeling something was wrong right from the start. In a while, my feeling grew to the extent that everything seemed to be wrong. I guess my previous experience with HP and Epson scanners ...
...fast. I've read somewhere the AGFA scanning software sends the whole firmware to the scanner each time it is started, which seems very likely. 2. Scanning itself is slooow. Not as slow as with some Plustek scanners, but still slow enough to make it unsuitable for OCR use, if you plan to OCR anything more than a few pages long. What's most surprising, an A4 scan takes about 50 seconds at anything above 100dpi (and ages at >300dpi), no matter if you ... Read review

quality scanners at affordable prices
Review of Agfa SnapScan 600 by kamfisa

Advantages: cheap, easy to install, fast, reliable
Disadvantages: bulky

I bought my scanner a couple of months ago, and I don't know why I didn't buy one sooner. I use it sooo much. I use it mostly to scan pictures of my family to use for e-greetings. The scanner comes with its own installation software, and its very simple to use. You just put in the Cd, and follow the insructions on screen. Then comes the fun in using it. I found it to scan relatively quickly and was fairly quiet. The scaned pictures can be done ...
...your choice, ie folders, emailed, optimized for web pages and sent to your printer to print image etc. The dimensions of the scanned image can be altered up to 800% or much smaller than 100% and you can choose to save only a portion of the image to your destination (so if you want to cut out most of the background you can do before you send it to your file). Many types of images can be scanned, from glossy photos, mat finish photos, magazine prints, ... Read review

Epson 4490
Review of Epson Perfection 4490 Photo by Bruce_uk

Advantages: Excellent quality when scanning slides and negatives
Disadvantages: Professional mode could cause problems for the novice used

...Previously I had the Epson 2480 and although this was good, it is no match for the 4490,expected really with the time elasped between the release of the models. With the resolution set at least 2400dpi and with only unsharp mask and colour restoration selected the faded slides and neagatives were nearly as new. There are a few points that should be noted. If you are a novice and just want to scan something quickly without having to set different ...
...selecting colour restoration and Background correction when they are not needed, you can have a negative effect on what would have been not such a bad scan, if these items were left alone. Also, as with many scanners if you want a good result but with an equally fast time for scanning, you won't get it. You need to move up in the market for quality and speed. All in all I wouldn't change the scanner with another in the same range. The digital ICE ... Read review

Portable Laptop Scanner - Plustek M12
Review of Plustek OpticSlim M12 by caroline9

Advantages: Lightweight, Portable, Compact, High Quality, Good Software & Bundled Stuff
Disadvantages: Can't Scan In Books/Booklets/Full Size Newspapers Direct

This scanner's intended purpose was to provide a portable scanner for my laptop - something that I could carry around without lugging a box that was bigger than my actual laptop! It had to meet 3 requirements: be portable, scan quickly and scan in detail - as I wanted to be able to scan in business cards for work and the occasional article. Anything else was a bonus. So, what did I actually make of the M12 scanner. Well after having this scanner ...
...have some bells and whistles. I was surprised when I opened the box as to just how small and light it was. It's about the size and weight of a toblerone bar, so if you are looking for a lightweight scanner, this one is great. It also proved to be highly portable - after you've downloaded the driver onto your laptop, you just plug it into a USB port and it is ready to scan. That's it - no power cords, no batteries that need re-charging, etc., all ... Read review
