Umax 2000P - Good Price, Decent Scanner
Review of UMAX Astra 2000P by hawklady99

Advantages: Decent quality scanner, good price, great selection of software.
Disadvantages: Scanning speed is on the slow side.

My old UMAX died on me and it was a great scanner. I decided to stay with UMAX, so i bought the Umax Astra 2000P, because I thought the quality would be the same as my first scanner. but i was WRONG. They added more useless bells and whistles and made the actual scanning process take twice as long, but the scans weren't any better. Also the scanner hasn't worked since the second month after I bought it. which was a long time ago now. For some reason ...
...should have never gone with UMAX again. The first scanner although it made nice scans, also screwed up my computer's POST I kept aborting start ups for weeks. It took forever to find out that it was a patch file that was needed from the UMAX download site. Why didn't UMAX contact me if they knew this was a problem? Why the hell did I ever fill out the registration form if not to be notified of a known problem with the equipment. Will never buy their ... Read review

Time has told
Review of HP ScanJet 5100C by Plymyphil

Advantages: Ease of use, reliability, durability
Disadvantages: Size, weight

...here to read about the HP ScanJet 5100C, not a history of your handheld garbage". Bear with me you see, this convoluted introduction is going somewhere vaguely related to the 5100C. This you see has been a scanner that has outlived the desire to upgrade. Sure, things have got smaller, thinner, great ways of side opening and even printer integration but this 5100C is still being used regularly and the results are still pleasing. Now, one thing I ...
...you have greater understanding, do explain. 'Why the need for excessively high resolutions?' They produce huge images that are impossible to manipulate and take up about five screens in size unless you reduce them. In addition the file sizes make the pargest of hard drives look like a tasty appetiser. Nope, lower resolution scanning has always been my choice and no doubt will continue to be for some time. With that in mind, how does this compare. ... Read review

5300C Scanner
Review of HP ScanJet 5300C by spursand45

Advantages: Four button instant use, color scanning, .pdf files, add-on pages for e-mail, slide compatible
Disadvantages: takes up some space, older technology.

The 5300C scanner from HP has given reliable use for three years. USB connection is a plus for this older scanner. I started with Windows 98 and I am now using with Windows XP home edition. It works well with XP. HP has the drivers on it's web page to direct the user to the proper program. The color (1200 dpi resolution) is compatible with current scanners. The ability to remove the cover and place a slide adaptor is a great addition. The four-button ... Read review

N640p... In Plain English
Review of Canon CanoScan N640P by Kyz22

Advantages: Good price, reliable, simple to use
Disadvantages: Has a boring name

...my recent review of another Canon scanner I though, ahh why not review the other one too, whilst my head is still full of scanning terminology. Sorry if it sounds a bit similar to my other scanning review, but there is only so much you can say about a scanner! So, the N640p, it sounds just like a manufacturers code that is used in a database somewhere. Well, to be brutally honest it is. Scanners, printers and suchlike never get good names. Cars will ...
...for this purpose, and the Canon N640p lets you do this with relative ease. You simple go to the settings panel. Installing the machine is easy, it works on a plug and play basis. Jam the cable into your computer, let it recognise your new hardware and you're ready to go. If you're not using Windows Me or Xp (home or professional) then you will probably have to use the disk to install the scanner as the Device Manager isn’t as advanced on their operating ... Adhesive mistake
Review of HP ScanJet 4400C by alliepow

Advantages: Previews of the scanned image/document, ability to adjust image
Disadvantages: The disc no longer works and we had problems with the cable

...We have now owned the HP Scan Jet 4400c for about 3 years now and it served us well until we bought another computer. The problem occurred very stupidly and was nothing technically wrong – just adhesively wrong. The disc to install this scanner onto a computer had a paper casing which had been glued down. When we installed it into our first computer, we tucked the flap inside and unfortunately the glue stuck to the disc and ruined it. We visited ...
...and very easy to understand. HP have made this easy for those and the instructions are easy to follow which means we were able to get using it quite quickly. The software includes Precision Pro but what was good was the chance to view the document, being able to adjust it and then finally scan it again. There are various options for changing the attributes and colouring e.g. greyscale etc. You are also able to choose what kind of document you are ... Read review
