Epson 4490
Review of Epson Perfection 4490 Photo by
Bruce_uk
Advantages: Excellent quality when scanning slides and negatives
Disadvantages: Professional mode could cause problems for the novice used
...Previously I had the Epson 2480 and although this was good, it is no match for the 4490,expected really with the time elasped between the release of the models.
With the resolution set at least 2400dpi and with only unsharp mask and colour restoration selected the faded slides and neagatives were nearly as new. There are a few points that should be noted. If you are a novice and just want to scan something quickly without having to set different ... ...selecting colour restoration and Background correction when they are not needed, you can have a negative effect on what would have been not such a bad scan, if these items were left alone. Also, as with many scanners if you want a good result but with an equally fast time for scanning, you won't get it. You need to move up in the market for quality and speed.
All in all I wouldn't change the scanner with another in the same range. The digital ICE ...

Dont buy it!
Review of Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB by
fsrc
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Colour sensitivity
I have bought this scanner to use in my office, and I wish I had not. It is slow and the colours it produces are useless. I wanted it to scan and copy A3 colour maps that I had produced so I could print them out and send drafts to my clients, however this machine is now collecting dust as I have gone back to my Brother A4 scanner and have to fold the maps in half and stick together later.
Ordinary black pen comes out as purple, dark green pencil ... ...expect for this price? In this case absolute rubbish! I am so very disappointed in it. Does anyone make an A3 colour scanner at a reasonable price???
The only things it has going for it is that it is compact and light weight and relatively easy to use. ...

Too good to be true
Review of Plustek OpticFilm 7200i by
AndrewPo
Advantages: Inexpensive, very fast, high resolution good quality output
Disadvantages: Unreliable and low quality construction
...minutes per full-resolution scan, the Plustek takes a minute. In fact I spent more time fiddling with the slides putting them into the mount than actually scanning. The resulting scans, while slightly noisier than other lower-resolution scanners I have used are wonderfully high resolution. Colours are also perhaps more subdued than the Canon, but of course, a few adjustments in Photoshop or Gimp soon fixes that.
The bad news however is that it turned ... ...noises and something inside jamming (not sure what, but turning off the power usually fixed it) that became more frequent as time went on, eventually resulting in it being unusable. I returned it and got my money back in full.
Would I recommend this scanner? At this price I probably would if you only want to scan a few of your favourite negatives or slides, but not if you are a professional. I am a very heavy user archiving my full back catalogue ...

Easy scanning anywhere you are
Review of Visioneer Strobe XP 100 by
laramax
Advantages: Compact, easy to use, portable
Disadvantages: Can only scan single sheets
I bought my Visioneer Strobe XP 100 because it is a great little scanner for use on the move. My main PC that I use for work is a laptop with docking station and I wanted something that would easily connect with that. I needed something that would let me organise all of my documents, photos, articles, brochures, and business cards and this Visioneer gave me all of that in a very compact unit that was light and easy to carry. It will pack easily into ... ...the USB port which mean I am able to scan documents anywhere I go and I don't have to carry lots of power leads and adaptors. It is a small scanner which works by means of a roller which takes in your document through a slot on the top, passes it over the scanner, and then pushes it out through the back. Because of its method of operation it is less than 300mm wide (12") and barely 50mm deep (2") so it takes up no space at all. The downside is that ...

CanonScan FS4000US
Review of Canon CanoScan FS4000US by
dwprices
Advantages: Very easy to use
Disadvantages: A bit slow
I bought this item a few years ago and was very impressed, easy to set up and use. Just plug it in load the software and off you go.
The TWAIN adapter is easy to use, just click on preview, and then on the photos you want to have scan, you get the choice of rotating them, and playing about with the colours if you want to, and a choice of what sizes you want them scanned with.
Canon, are very good and have produced many updates to the TWAIN, the ... ...manily used this with the APS adapter wchich has been effortless, just load the film in teh cartridge, slide the cartridge into the machine, press the scan button and wait for the photos to appear. I have only used the film adapter once, and did not find that the film lined up with theframes on the adapter.
It also comes with adapters for slides, which my family have made good use off, again easy to use, load the slides, push the adapter in and ...
