I have bought this scanner to use in my office, and I wish I had not. It is slow and the colours it produces are useless. I wanted it to scan and copy A3 colour maps that I had produced so I could print them out and send drafts to my clients, however this machine is now collecting dust as I have gone back to my Brother A4 scanner and have to fold the maps in half and stick together later. Ordinary black pen comes out as purple, dark green pencil ...

The Mustek ScanExpress 1248 UB scanner is very old now and due to its age it has become very cheap. Overall I think that the Mustek 1248UB is a very good scanner as I have one, and I have to say that it has been very reliable for the 3 years I have had it. ...the latest drivers from the Mustek website. A bit of a hassle but very simple to do plus they have a very straight forward set of instructions on their website as to how to do this. Other than this slight annoyance the installation is very simple as it comes with a very comprehensive instruction manual and the onscreen guide when installing is plain and simple. ...pc shop as my other Mustek brokedown. upon opening was pleasently suprised by the design better than most scanners at this end of the market. but sadly did have some driver conflicts with Windows xp in the end tho got it to work perfectly on wifes pc running Windows ME. Advantages: Cheap, USB powered, not bad software (except text recognition)
Disadvantages: Slow, Text recognition software is hopeless

I've had this scanner for ages...so long that I can't remember when I actually got it! But this does show that it is built well, as it has been moved around my house to a number of different locations, and been bashed around a bit, and still works fine! However, even though it is durable, it is slow, taking about 30 seconds on average to scan 1 page. This doesn't sound too bad, but compared to some it is very slow, but for the price you really can't ...
...is hopeless, to test it I printed off some text from Word (at about size 14), scanned it using the software and it had trouble picking that up, it came out with about 3 different sizes of text and about 3 different fonts! The speed of scan and text recognition are about the only bad things I can think of about this scanner, considering the price.
