Umax 2000P - Good Price, Decent Scanner
Review of UMAX Astra 2000P by
hawklady99
Advantages: Decent quality scanner, good price, great selection of software.
Disadvantages: Scanning speed is on the slow side.
My old UMAX died on me and it was a great scanner. I decided to stay with UMAX, so i bought the Umax Astra 2000P,
because I thought the quality would be the same as my first scanner. but i was WRONG. They added more useless bells and whistles and made the actual scanning process take twice as long, but the scans weren't any better. Also the scanner hasn't worked since the second month after I bought it. which was a long time ago now.
For some reason ... ...should have never gone with UMAX again.
The first scanner although it made nice scans, also screwed up my computer's POST I kept aborting start ups for weeks. It took forever to find out that it was a patch file that was needed from the UMAX download site. Why didn't UMAX contact me if they knew this was a problem? Why the hell did I ever fill out the registration form if not to be notified of a known problem with the equipment. Will never buy their ...

Scan-tastic
Review of Canon CanoScan FB630P by
Kyz22
Advantages: Small, compact, cheap, high res
Disadvantages: Noisy
...jargon. The users manual and Canon online help mean it is easy to set up and use on a day-to-day basis. It is good for home or office use and especially good for those with limited space.
Since I got the scanner it is gone down in price and you can probably find it for about £35. There are better scanners out there, if you are wanted perfect images, but with my budget I will settle for 'almost perfect' and save myself £100. The only qualms I have ... ...noisy when it scans. This is unlikely to bother most of you, but if you want silent-scanning then you'll not be pleased here. N.B.
When used in conjunction with an Epson Stylus C42ux printer (or other photo enhance printer) you can reproduce scanned images at a very high quality. ...

a good piece of kit
Review of Acer AcerScan 620P by
console
Advantages: Beautiful print quality scans-Extremely easy to use software. Quick copy utility. Extremely easy installation and setup of software.
Disadvantages: Scanner is exceptionaly large,
When scanning 35mm photos I don't think any scanner can exceed the quality of the Acer. If you're scanning for web pictures then a 300dpi resolution is more than adaquate for a quality picture and the scan time is very short. If you want to scan at a higher resolution for prints this option is available, along with different scaling settings, and a multitude of other settings. All of which are easy to understand and work exceptionaly well. For pictures ... ...that it can be purchased on Ubid.com. Most bids on it don't exceed £40 and with shipping the total cost was £60. Then there's a £10 rebate, There is an OCR Utility with the unit, maybe someone else can shed some light on this as I don't use it. It was purchased mainly for scanning pictures and copying text (unchanged). Another software came with the scanner--Ulead's Photo Express Version 2.0. I have opened the scanner software from 3 differnt Imaging ...

Cheep and Cheerful
Review of Visioneer PaperPort 6100 B by
grandleveller
Advantages: easy to use
Disadvantages: not many
I've had my visioneer 6100B scanner now for a couple of years and i'm very happy with it's performance.
Ok,what's in the box. Firstly there's the scanner of course, an installation guide, software CD, USB cable and a power lead.
The scanner it's self measures in at 48cm x 28 1/2cm x 8 1/2cm (19inches x 11.5inches x 3.5inches) which by modern standards is a little bulky but it's still not too bad. In appearance it looks like most other scanners ... ...you'll see paper port or visioneer scan manager, select this and the click ok, this process sets the scanner to scan using the paper port software.
Now to scan a document, place your document face down on the glass bed, i find lining it up along the referece frame helps a lot, especially keeping the document straight, now close the lid.If paper port isn't yet up and running then open it by pressing the button on the front of the scanner now press ...

A Great Buy
Review of Visioneer One Touch 7600 by
claireydeacon
Advantages: Quick and easy to install, "Idiot Proof"
Disadvantages: Maximum Item Size A4, but great for general home use
...but ended up with the Visioneer OneTouch 7600 USB. It is excellent.
It comes with a hugh instruction manual, which I thought I would never get through, but upon closer inspection realised that it is written in 5 different languages, so you only need 1/5th of the book.
We got it home, unpacked it and started with the set up. It couldn't have been easier. There are only two holes on the back, the power supply and the USB port. You can't get them ... ...scanner which does all we want an probably a whole lot more.
*******UPDATE*******
Despite not being "XP Compatible", there is an update on the Visioneer site which although not guaranteed to work, has meant that we can still use it and haven't had to buy a new Scanner. ...
