Inexpensive Veteran Scanner, a Household's Friend
Advantages: Durable, Programmable, Easy to Set Disadvantages: Too Slow for Offices, Quality Pictures Require Changing Settings
The Microtec ScanMaker 4850 flatbed scanner might seem obsolete due to its quality, being half of what more modern scanners can offer, and the fact it is not a part of a multi-functional copier, but you should not be assumptuous about this device.
Instead of reviewing the mechanics and energy consumption of the scanner, this summary will provide you practical information about the technology in question.
The scanner came with an USB wire and power ... ...to do is plug it in and install the software), installation CDs (multi-lingual, one for Max, one for Windows) with plenty of software including Microtek's scanner applications and an OCR application, which is gold, as it turns your scanned material available for editing in Word. Value for Money
I've gotten this scanner quite a while ago (in 2005), and then its specifications were outstanding for the price. I was recommended less precise HP ...

Might be bought at Tescos but still the best
Advantages: easy to set up, easy to use, and very fast Disadvantages: see below for this
...brilliant price then go for Microtek Scanner 3600.
I bought this one for £39.99 in Tescos. So I even had points added to our tesco club card!
For this price you not only get the scanner but installation software plus Adobd Photo Deluxe, Ulead photo impact 5 and OCR software.
Setting it up is pretty straightforward but the installation guide tells you to put the installation CD Rom in and then connect the scanner after the software has been installed.
... ...saying that it cannot of course find the scanner! This could be of putting but just ignore this and carry on.
Anyway once it is up and running its very simple to use, you can even go into advanced mode for a challenge.
Its got a USB interface so it wont work with windows 95 and it does like a lot of ram. They recommend 32mb but 64 mb is probably better.
This scanner does all it says on the box, is simple to set up and use so I would definately ...

New Life to Old Photo's
Advantages: Cheap as chips Disadvantages: Family ask you to Scan their old photos too
Do you have boxes of old 35mm film or slides from before you bought that shiny new digital camea?
This is the perfect gaget for transferring old films onto your PC and it is one of the cheapest that I was able to find.
The FilmScan 2700 can scan 35mm positive and negative film. Once scanned, images can be saved, printed, shared, enhanced and published. The accompanying software contains several image adjustment tools allow scans to be fully optimized ... ...is able to scan 35mm exposures in slide or strip format with a reasonably high 2700dpi optical resolution. Each top quality scan is complete in arounf 1 minute 10 seconds. So if you have a lot of images it does take some time, but the scanner does not take a lot of attention and you can watch TV or even write a review on Ciao as you use it!
The installation is quick and simple, simply plug in to computer and install the software - if you have ever ...

Great scanner with one problem
Advantages: Good picture Disadvantages: overheat some times
...went on line to the microtek site and searched for scanmaker 6 and they had the drivers right there on the site.
I like this scanner it has good picture. It is also a very quite scanner. There is one problem I have found with it and that is that it can over heat. To make it over heat you have leave it on for three or four hours. When it is over heated it won’t work but all you have to do is turn it off and then on. I would suggest this scanner to ...

Cheap and not so cheerful
Advantages: Spec for price Disadvantages: Its apparent design fault
...calls (to no avail) to Microtek themselves, and some expense on my part, Computerbench replaced the scanner.
Installation was quite straightforward; the instructions were pretty clear, although - again a Mac problem, though I'm not sure if some Microsoft OS's may be similarly left out on the software CD - I had to pay an extra £2.99 in order to download the driver for OSX, which was by no means a new OS at that point. The scanning software supplied ... ...4.0 (for Windows) and Adobe Photoshop 5.0 (for Mac). Since I already had a newer version of PS installed, this raised further questions about the up-to-dateness of the machine! Also enclosed was a freebie virus scanner called Titanium - again, only for PCs - with a 'win a mouse' competition included.
All appeared fine with the third scanner and I enjoyed several months of almost problem-free use. I say 'almost problem-free' because I'm used to minor ...
