A good initiative

Advantages: Can help young people afford to stay in education
Disadvantages: Based on last years household income

EMA (educational maintenance allowance) http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/ 14To19/MoneyToLearn/EMA If a young person is 16, 17 or 18 and has left, or is about to leave, compulsory education, then they may be able to claim EMA to carry on learning. This could be up to £30 a week (can be £10, £20 or £30 a week depending on circumstances). EMA could help with the cost of books, travel, equipment or anything useful to continue learning. ...
...into the young person's bank account. Attendance is taken into account, and students are expected to attend regularly and work hard on their course. This money does not affect any benefits that parents receive and is also not affected by any part time work that the young person may have. In some cases (usually agreed with the college or school) young people may also be able to receive bonuses. There are also critera that young people have to fit ...

Excellent Support

Advantages: New Computer, Internet And Degree
Disadvantages: If you earn to much you woldn't be eligible

Open University Financial Support. At the Open University you have a great selection of courses to choose from and if like me you don't earn as much as you'd like to, you can get financial support to help cover the cost of studying with them. I decided to study S103 (Discovering Science), the course cost is £695, but with me not earning so much last year (as awards are based on the previous tax year) this was paid in full, which I thought was brilliant ...
...A few weeks later, the Open University sent me a cheque for £250 for my course materials and a couple of weeks after the course started I received my cheque for £390 for my internet and computer grant, of which I brought a Dell E521 desktop and Sky Broadband (which I should review both.). If you are thinking of studying with the Open University I would recommend you apply for a financial award as you may be eligible even if you home is earning up ...

£200+ per hour

Advantages: Financial assistance for very little effort, suitable for almost any work placement students, well-run local offices
Disadvantages: Some refund-requirements aren't clear from the outset

...found, was Leonardo. The Leonardo da Vinci program aims to promote availability and quality of training among the European member states, and improve the options for students wishing to take up work placements abroad. The scheme has been running since 1994 and is currently in its second phase, and over €1 billion of funding was made available for the years 2000-2006. Though it's a Europe-wide set-up, the scheme is administered at a local level, ...
...I've been lucky because our Leonardo center is not over-subscribed. Many people don't know it's there, and others simply cannot be bothered to fill in the form which can look pretty daunting from the outset. As a result, those of us who did apply got very generous grants - though the amounts will change from year to year, and from local body to local body. If more eligible people have applied we would probably have got less, though fewer applications ...

Erasmus - A good year abroad move

Advantages: All organised for you, so not much work to do
Disadvantages: It is studying as opposed to an assistantship, so there is a certain amount of work involved.

...Erasmus Scheme run by the European Union benefits students at Unis accross Europe who are required to take a year abroad as part of their studies. Each language department at Universites in Britain will have links with other unis and much like an exchange scheme, students from each uni will go to the other to study. The number of links will depend on the languages tought at the University. But there are normally at least 5-6 in each country. At ...
...be in contact with other officers from the other unis. How long to go for? It is up to you to choose which University you wish to study at and which country. You can either spend a whole academic year at 1 University or you could split it between 2 in 2 different countries, i.e. 1 semester at each. What to study? Basically the choice is yours. When you are out in the foreign University you can choose whatever options you want. Obviously it is ...

University Scholarship for Students doing German

Advantages: very easy to apply!
Disadvantages: Grammar exam - but it isn't that hard!

...the German Education authority - DAAD (Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst) The German government gives you a sum of money to go over to Germany over the summer and study at a summer school. The course and which uni is totally up to you. There are so many to choose from all over Germany. Basically it is done through your University back here in England. I believe most Unis with a language department can apply for the scholarship on behalf of their ...
...of all. This is things like what is the odd word out and fill in the gaps, etc. Then if you are successful, you need to fill out a form that your uni will be sent. This is pretty easy. The hard bit is having to write a page of brilliantly accurate German and explaining what and where you wish to study in Germany and why. Then you need to send a German CV off to them and get a reference from a tutor or lecturer and that's it! I had to send mine off ...
